Michael Vick to be an Eagle

michael vick eagles 247x300 Michael Vick to be an Eagle“I know I’ve done some terrible things, made a horrible mistake. Now I want to be part of the solution and not the problem.”

So says the once Falcon and newest Eagle Michael Vick.  Vick was recently reinstated in the NFL following his prison term for running a dogfighting ring.  Yesterday he signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia  Eagles.

Vick’s close friend Tony Dungy said, “I really got the sense he wanted to do some great things. He wanted to be a positive role model for young people. He wanted to get back to his family.”

Which is where we find Michael Vick. He let a lot of people down, namely those young people and his own family – his own kids, but also fans from all walks and basically anyone with a sense of decency.  Dogfighting?  Really?

Says Vick, “For the life of me, I can’t understand why I was involved in such pointless activity.  Why did I risk so much at the pinnacle of my career?

“There was a point in my life where I felt it was wrong and I knew it was wrong. To this day I have to live with that shame and that embarrassment.”

And so he lives with it, and he paid his dues.  That’s enough, isn’t it?

The right thing here seems to be the popular second chance.  Michael Vick deserves a second chance.  His kids deserve their father to have a second chance.  The fans deserve their star to have a second chance.  Second chances all around!

Michael Vick get it, just as he knows other may not:  “I understand to a certain degree, but our country is a country of second chances. I paid my debt to society. I spent two years in prison. … That was a humbling experience. I can’t explain how deeply hurt and how sorry I was.”

Needless to say animal rights groups aren’t getting it.

Let’s hope that Vick comes through this as the best he can be.  He owes the young people that much.  He owes his family that much.

Ok, fine, second chances from his family and friends, that’s their business. Second chance to be a role model for children, young boys especially? Between this and Chris Brown, how do you explain to children that horrific violence IS something to be taken seriously?

What Vick did was horrible. He has, however, served his time. He has asked for forgiveness and a second chance, and I’m glad the Eagles gave it to him. I hope he can redeem himself.
