Arturo Gatti’s Wife is Murder Suspect in Boxer’s Death
Authorities investigating the death of Arturo Gatti have revealed Gatti’s wife, Amanda Rodrigues, is one of their main suspects in the boxer’s death.
Gatti was found dead early Saturday morning by his wife in their room at the seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas in Brazil. Brazilian police officials have pointed to inconsistencies in Rodrigues’ testimony that have given them grounds for suspicion. The couple was on a ‘second honeymoon’ in Brazil along with their 10-month-old son.
Gatti’s wife revealed to authorities that she and her husband were involved in a very heated argument on Friday night in a Brazilian bar, and claims that Gatti was drunk when they came home. Gatti was found with marks on his neck and a wound to the back of his head which they believe was the result of a blow from an unknown object. According to reports police found a blood stained purse strap that one detective believes may have been used to strangle the fighter.
A close friend of Gatti’s, Brazilian boxer and four-time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas told the G1 Web site of Brazil’s largest television network Globo that he “knew [Gatti and his wife] were having some sort of problem and were about to separate.”
Gatti was scheduled to testify in a trial in New York this week in a lawsuit filed against the New York State Athletic commission by former opponent Joey Gamache. The lawsuit stems from a February, 2000 fight that left Gamache nearly dead from head trauma and with permanent brain damage. There are no reports that Gamache has been questioned in the death of Gatti.
Our thoughts go out to the Gatti family, and let’s hope they find who took this promising boxer’s life. What an incredibly sad situation – if the authorities turn out to be correct and Rodrigues is found guilty of murdering her husband, this tragedy will be doubled for their infant son.
