Steve McNair Memorial Service: Thousands Gather to Remember NFL Star (VIDEO)

Thousands gathered today at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Nashville Thursday evening to remember Steve McNair. Several former teammates and coaches spoke at the service for the slain ex-NFL star. One of those was Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason, who addressed McNair’s family.

“I know you loved your husband, and boys you loved your dad… And he knew it,” an emotional Mason said to McNair’s wife, Mechelle and sons. “Mechelle, you were a loving wife, until his final days. Always caring for him in every possible way, all that a husband could have asked for and want. I know that today is difficult for you, but remember that Steve is no longer suffering…He is watching you, he is not thinking about death. He is more alive than he has ever been before. Steve is happy beyond what our minds can comprehend.”

Don Weatherell from the Steve McNair foundation remembered his friend for what he did for the community. “We lost a good man, someone we all cared about deeply, and someone we will never, ever forget. Mechelle wanted me to say a few words tonight about Steve and the good work he did in his foundation, in helping people who weren’t quite as fortunate as he was.

“Steve always believed it was important to give back to the communities that gave so much to him,” Weatherell continued. He did it for one reason. And that was because he wanted to. That’s who he was. And that is how I always remember him.”

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher and former Titans running back Eddie George also spoke at the service.

Authorities say McNair was fatally shot by his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi who then killed herself in a murder-suicide.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McNair family. Such a tragic loss, and so heartbreaking that his sons will grow up without their father.
