Steve McNair: Sahel Kazemi Believed He Would Leave Mechelle & Marry Her

More details are slowly emerging in the shooting deaths of former football star Steve McNair and his alleged girlfriend, 20-year-old waitress, Sahel Kazemi.  According to Kazemi’s family, she loved the married father-of-four and believed he would leave his wife Mechelle and marry her.

Soheyla Kazemi, sister to Sahel, but more like her mother-figure since she had raised her since their mom was killed in Iran 10 years ago, said the 20-year-old believed McNair was going to leave his wife and children in the next two or three weeks and eventually marry her.

Soheyla, 46, doesn’t believe her sister, whom she refers to as her “daughter,” was capable of murder.  Police, so far, are not confirming a murder-suicide and a double homicide is still a possibility until their investigation is completed.

Kazemi said, “It’s not true.  She loves Steve too much.  She said they were planning to get married.”

Sahel had dropped out of high school a few years ago and moved to Nashville, Tenn. from Jacksonville with her then-boyfriend, Keith Norfleet.

Sahel’s 23-year-old niece (daughter of Soheyla), said she was “strong-willed” and did things her way.  Sahel was a party girl and liked to go out with friends, and didn’t like being alone. She adds, “We didn’t know until she had her things packed and said she was leaving.”

The older Kazemi said Sahel began dating Steve about 5 months ago and met him at Dave & Busters restaurant just as co-workers said in an earlier interview.

Soheyla met McNair last month when she went to Nashville for Sahel’s 20th birthday party.  “He was nice,” she admitted.  “He did everything for my daughter.”  She said Sahel “had never been happier.”

Kazemi’s nephew, Farzin Abdi, said, “We met him [McNair] because I don’t watch football and didn’t know who he was.  We went out to dinner and she was so happy and was having fun.  Were we happy about the relationship?  No.”

He added, “It’s hard right now to imagine what people are saying.  I can’t believe it because she was a sweet girl. This is hard on us.”

Abdi said Sahel was given gifts and promised many things.  “I don’t know if he had filed for divorce but I thought it wouldn’t happen.”

Soheyla learned of Sahel’s death and that of McNair when she checked her Yahoo mail.  Although Sahel was unnamed in the initial report, she knew it was her daughter (sister).

She said, “Why?  Why?  She was too young,” said Soheyla.

It’s unclear if McNair and wife Mechelle were separated - there are no reports of any divorce filings but their home was up for sale for $3 million.  Of course a house for sale doesn’t mean the two were splitting.  And according to reports, Mechelle was “blindsided” by the news of her husband’s (alleged) affair with Sahel.

It’s also unclear what exactly happened between McNair and Kazemi the morning they died.  Was she pregnant (intial autopsy reports did not indicate she was) and told her married football boyfriend, and he freaked?  Did Sahel confront him about leaving his wife and he told her never would?  Was McNair breaking it off with Kazemi?  So many theories and so little answers.

Two families are now dealing with the aftermath of their loved ones’ senseless deaths.  And four boys are without their father.  To me, that is the real tragedy in all of this.  Yes, it’s sad that two people are dead, but what’s more heartbreaking, is those children have to deal with the choices their dad made that ultimately lead to his death.
