Steve McNair Death: Wife Mechelle & Sons “Doing The Best They Can”
Coming to terms with the murder of a family member must be one of the most difficult things a person would ever have to endure. That is what Mechelle Cartwright, wife of slain NFL star Steve McNair, and their sons, must now do.
Close friend to Steve for many years and family spokesperson, Forrest Bradford, has been staying with Mechelle and the boys since Saturday, at their Green Hills home, doing his best to comfort the family.
He said, “They’re doing the best they can. How do you deal with losing your father, you know, really?” Friends said the boys spent most of the day sleeping.
McNair’s mom, came in from out of town, to help the family with funeral arrangements, which have now been finalized for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Reed Green Coliseum on the campus of the University of Southern Miss.
Former Titans’ player, Zach Piller, said, “Mechelle’s a strong woman; she’s as strong as Steve. It’s real hard to rationalize what God was thinking with this one. I just know I love Steve.”
Fans have made a makeshift memorial outside of McNair’s Gridiron9 restaurant. Whit Hubner said, “I wanted to come down to be closer to him somehow and pay my respects.”
Although most people want to remember the former Titans’ player for the good things he did for the community and for football, some believe there is a lesson to be learned from what has happened.
Morrow, a fan of McNair’s said, “Sticking with your family values, the way you was raised, how you were raised, taught, brought up. Probably Steve’s family and everything, his mother, brought him up to be a decent young man — which he was, but he just got caught up into the wrong situation.”
It sounds like Mechelle and her boys are surrounded by many loved ones to help them through this very confusing and difficult time. They are going to need all the support they can get.
