TV Pitchman Billy Mays Dead at 50

Billy Mays, who became famous for his frenetic pitches for products like OxiClean and Orange Glo, was found dead in his Tampa, Florida home on Sunday morning. The cause of death is unknown, but it’s been learned that Mays suffered a blow to the head during a US Airways flight on Saturday night.

While it’s unclear whether the rough plane landing and his subsequent injury contributed to his death, Mays’ wife Deborah reported that her husband complained about not feeling well before going to bed on Saturday night. She found him in bed in their home at around 7:45am Sunday morning and called 911 when she couldn’t revive him.

After the flight, Mays was interviewed by Fox 13 News in Tampa and said, “All of a sudden as we hit, you know, it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”

Mays also wrote on his Twitter page shortly after the incident, “Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air.”

Although Mays had no known health problems, he walked with a limp and was reportedly scheduled for hip replacement surgery.

Our thoughts go out to Mays’ wife and son, William Mays III. Although the death of a parent is always difficult, I imagine a death as sudden as this must be particularly hard and shocking.
