Golf Pro Chris Smith’s Wife’s Death: Daughter Was Driving The SUV
Sunday, June 21, was a devastating day for professional golfer Chris Smith. His wife Beth, was killed in a car wreck, and his two children were seriously injured. And what adds to the family’s heartbreak, is the Smith’s 16-year-old daughter, Abigail, was reportedly driving the SUV that was involved in the accident.
Beth Smith was killed on Sunday, June 21, around 11:35 a.m. on Interstate 69 near Angola, Indiana. Beth and Chris’s kids, Cameron, 12, and Abigail, 16, were both listed in critical condition Monday morning at Fort Wayne’s Lutheran Hospital.
Police believe Abigail was driving her mom and brother in an SUV and briefly lost control. When the teen tried to correct the truck’s path, she ended up veering across the median and collided head-on with a Greyhound bus carrying the London Ontario Silverbacks football team.
Abigail and Cameron suffered burns, cuts, and broken bones.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem released a brief statement: “All of us at the PGA Tour are saddened by the news of the tragic accident which claimed the life of Beth Smith.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his family during this very difficult time.”
As a mom, my heart breaks for Abigail. Not only did she lose her mom, but she will probably have feelings of guilt, thinking it’s all her fault that her mom was killed. Hopefully her family will support her and reassure her that it was an accident and that she should not blame herself.
