TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 had record breaking numbers – nearly 10 million viewers - when the season opener aired on Monday, May 25.  However, the ratings took a nose dive with its second and third shows getting 5.5 million viewers and six million, respectively.

From Us:

After a record-setting turnout for last week’s season premiere, viewership for Jon & Kate Plus 8 dropped significantly in its second week.

Fueled by ongoing media reports about Jon and Kate Gosselin‘s marital difficulties, the May 25th premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8 attracted a staggering 9.8 millions viewers, easily beating such highly anticipated network offerings as ABC’s Lost season finale.

The two newest episodes of Jon and Kate which aired this past Monday, however, scored only 5.5 million and 6 million viewers respectively. A precipitous drop, but still big numbers by basic cable standards.

Interestingly, neither one of Monday night’s new episodes addressed the subject of the Gosselin’s crumbling marriage. Instead, both shows were built around material which had already been shot prior to the scandal breaking.

So, what does that mean?  The public was so hungry to see how Jon and Kate acted around each other, they couldn’t help themselves, and tuned in?  But, when the show focuses on the children and how Jon and Kate go about their daily lives (which is what the show is supposed to be about) with such a big family, it’s not as interesting?

Do we want this family to fail?  Or are we rooting for them, the kids, the family as a unit?

I hope they can work it out, particularly for those eight precious babies.  Forget the ratings Jon and Kate – focus on your children.  Shut. the. cameras. off.

Not sure how the ratings system works, but perhaps people stopped tuning after the first episode because they felt dirty watching a marriage and family crumble. If people were expecting them to be airing more dirty laundry you’d think show #2 would still be pulling in big numbers in anticipation of that.
