It’s no secret that pacifiers are a breeding ground for bacteria — yet a necessary evil, as many parents will claim. And let’s face it, those things fall, bounce and roll countless times a day, often just brushed or rinsed off and then reinserted. To help stop the spread of germs, Pipila created the first portable pacifier sterilizer — small enough to fit in any diaper bag — that uses UV light to sterilize.
The product works like a breeze: Simply put a pacifier in face down, close the contraption and wait  5 minutes for the UV light to go off. But my question was this: Is UV light safe?
According to Pipila’s people:
“The combination of UV and O3 function to penetrate and rupture the cell wall of the germ, then attack and destroy the DNA in the cell’s nucleus. This results in the termination of germs on the pacifier. Both UV and Ozone are elements of nature. Ozone is a naturally occurring molecule that is harmless to humans. Once Ozone attacks and destroys germs, it breaks down into the oxygen we breathe.”
While good old soap and water works just fine, I’ve found the Pipila to be quite handy when there isn’t a faucet in sight: Like on the subway where the mere air makes me want to sanitize everything on my baby.
