Toy Fair Reader Response: The Toys You Asked For

We’d like to respond to some of your comments on our Best Kids Toys For 2010 feature regarding an outcry for more back-to-basics toys — nixing the battery-run, plastic big shots. I was there at the fair and contributed to the article, and while I personally gravitate towards simple, imagination-provoking, eco-conscious toys for my toddler (which we DID include!), we were looking through kids eyes. What are the new toys our kids will go gaga for this year? And whether or not you choose to buy them, Toy Story LEGOs and Dancing Star Mickey are going to be hot tickets in 2010. We also looked for toys that were a more useful version of a typical toy (like the portable Tiny Loves mobile and build-able — and store-able — Mega Bloks kitchenette), as well as truly innovative newbies (like the iXL, Sonic Slam and Puppy Tweets). But we understand there are many parents  looking for more organic options.

While we didn’t have the time constraints to put in ALL of the toys we loved (which is why we have this blog!), and not all of our favorite companies had newsworthy launches for 2010, here are some fantastic toy makers worth checking out:

ImagiPlay

This company stands by three guidlines: All natural, earth friendly and child safe. One of my favorite companies, they make everything from play sets to push toys to rattles — all high quality and thoughtful. Look for my review of their eco-affordable line soon!

P’kolino

These stylish, functional toys and furniture are described as “smart products” designed to encourage both parents and children to play. We fell in love with their P’kolino Plump stacking toy (out this spring) made of rubber wood and felt, which includes stackable arms, legs, clothing — even a cape — for a wide variety of silly creations. (A perfect example of improving a trusted developmental toy.) There wasn’t a product in their line we didn’t ooh and ahh over, so they’re definitely worth checking out.

Innovative Kids

We were really bummed that their products didn’t make the final cut for our feature because they have some truly wonderful books, toys and games — many designed by mothers, teachers and even kids. More specific reviews are to come, but one of our favorite aspects of the company is their great line of books: From storybooks that contain character masks and play scripts, to “green start” board books that inspire children to love and respect the earth, to their “Now I’m Reading!” program.

Skip*Hop

Always a favorite around these here parts, Skip*Hop simply didn’t have any standout toys this season — although they do have a new line of ADORABLE backpacks that are BPA-, phthalate- and PVC-free, as well as a new diaper bag on the way.

Dandelion

A great eco-friendly brand, Dandelion is coming out with a brand new Bamboo Zoo Collection, featuring super soft stuffed animals made of sustainable bamboo and stuffed with natural corn fibers. A little pricey (ranging from $20 to $28 per animal), but a great option for those looking for a safe lovey.

We included Sprig’s Dolphin Explorer Boat in our Holiday Gift Guide — recently named 2010 Specialty Toy of the Year — and we still can’t get enough of their durable, paint-free, child-safe toys made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastic. They also have great toy trucks and a new line of frisbees on the way.

Launching their new “My First Green Toys” this spring (stay tuned for a review!), this earth-friendly company will introduce toys for toddlers and infants, like a stacker, tug boat and blocks. Plus, we’re still swooning over their green tea set that we featured in our Gift Guide.

These companies made the cut, but just to reiterate:

Plan Toys

Besides the new rattles we featured, we loved — well — everything. From the expected blocks and train sets to musical instruments and a football table — it’s all well-designed, eco-friendly and unique. This is my pick for Standout Toy Maker at the fair.

Kid O

The baby gym we featured was one of the first “we HAVE to include that” toys we found, and according to the response we received, you all agree. This is the same company as the award-winning Bilibo — the ultimate in imaginative play.

Hape

The blocks featured on our toddler toy page might be my favorite of the bunch, but this German company (focused on quality, safety, and ecological and social responsibilities) had an entire collection we could have easily featured — including an innovative stacking toy and line of cars.

We were only three people scouring this massive fair, so we’re always looking for more tips! Leave a comment with your favorite brand we missed!

And stay tuned for more specific reviews…
