There is no need to switch to plastic bottles ever; I used glass bottles for both children, now 2 & 5 and felt more confident using those than any type of plastic. In 5 years of baby-raising, no broken glass and no plastic that (no matter what the number on it) is difficult to recycle and has no redeeming value for the environment.

Except that you should never give a glass bottle to a baby, whether it's encased in neoprene or not. Glass bottles are wonderful for young babies, but once the child is old enough to hold his or her own bottle, you need to switch to plastic for safety's sake. There are plenty of BPA-free bottles out there these days, and it's much more likely that your child will be cut by a broken n bottle than harmed by non-existent BPA.
