The Babble Review: Sleep Sack Roundup

We never used sleep sacks with my daughter, I have no idea why. And I have no recollection of that time either. Funny how that happens . . . But now that my son is fighting his way out of the swaddle, I knew he needed an extra blanket that was safe and, more importantly, a clear cue that it’s bedtime. I ran some sleep sacks through the rigorous baby boy test and here are the tops:

SoMi Baby

I love the SoMi for its sturdiness while still being soft and cozy. Out of the sleep sack contenders this all-natural sleep sack feels most like a real baby blanket. A very well-made blanket with modern design and attention to detail that won’t migrate in the night. The SoMi comes in three sizes, but I found the size two to be the best value. Since the SoMi is adjustable so you can tie up the size two in the early days; let it unfurl as the baby becomes toddler-sized.

Halo SleepSack/Swaddle

A two-in-one, the Halo sleep sack has removable “wings” you can use to swaddle your baby while he’ll still be swaddled. Once he’s too big, you can remove the wings and have a sleep sack. It seems like the perfect combo unless, like our long-limbed baby, he outgrows the sleep sack portion before he’s ready to be free of the swaddle. But they do make the straight up sleep sack in large sizes in cozy cotton and fleece.

Aden & Anais Muslin Sleep Sack

aden&anais

Discussed many times before, Aden & Anais sleep sacks in muslin are lightweight, wash well and are perfect when you don’t want to overheat your baby. I love this design and it can be a fantastic gender-neutral hand me down. At $29.95 the price is right for a high quality sleep sack your baby can cuddle up in for quite awhile. – April Peveteaux

How about merino wool sleep sacks? I don’t see any in your test, but personally recommend Merino Kids because of the funky prints and super soft fabric. I bought my at http://www.babysleepbags.com but I think they’re sold on Amazon as well.

Thanks Ellen! I didn’t test any with wool since it’s hot as heck here right now. But I’ll check it out for winter. – April
