I love me some good old fashioned croquet. But when I tried to entice my child into a rousing round, she looked at my incredibly simple antique set and was completely nonplussed. A much better way to lure her into loving the classic game would be to invest in an Anatex Animal Croquet set.
The set includes six colorful wickets, four wooden mallets and four wooden balls. This set, which is appropriate for ages three and up, is available from Saks Fifth avenue here for $30.

I had 6 siblings who played combat croquet. How many times I had to dig my croquet ball out of the mud and weeds of the pond… Half of the game was defensive in nature to avoid letting anyone hit your ball and give them the chance to send it flying. Over the road and into the drainage gully was another favorite destination. We made obstacle courses to make it more interesting. Kind of like a miniature golf course, only more rudimentary, with ramps and barriers and our own water hazards on the course. What a blast!
