For Father’s Day my 3-year-old daughter and I went to a local toy store to pick up something special for her dad. I let her decide on the gift all by herself. Her choice? Candyland. Yes, Candyland, exactly what all Dads want for Father’s Day, ‘natch.
Candyland has become a cliché for game time with the kids. It is very frequently their first foray into the world of board games and has been a popular favorite for generations. It was first designed in the 1940s…so it’s been around a while to earn that reputation.
But while everyone knows and perhaps loves Candyland I couldn’t resist plugging this as my first game of the 7 Days of Games series. It could be because I’ve played it about ten times in the last 24 hours or perhaps because I too loved it as a child. Some reasons that it continues to be a wonderful introduction to gaming are the simple cards, easy instructions and it all goes by pretty fast…not painfully slow as some board games can seem (hello game of LIFE). If you don’t for some reason already have a copy in your closet you can pick one up here for $9.93.
