Three year old, Isabella Santorum suffers from Trisomy 18, “a condition which is caused by a chromosomal defect. It occurs in about 1 out of every 3000 live births,” according to the Trisomy 18 Foundation’s website.

The site also states  that “unlike Down syndrome, which also is caused by a chromosomal defect, the developmental issues caused by Trisomy 18 are associated with medical complications that are more potentially life-threatening in the early months and years of life.”

Despite those numbers, the Foundation does state that, “a small number of adults (usually girls) with Trisomy 18 have and are living into their twenties and thirties, although with significant developmental delays that do not allow them to live independantly without assisted caregiving.”

Senator Santorum has canceled his immediate plans to campaign further in the state of Florida. The Duggar Family, of TV’s 19 Kids and Counting are big supporters and plan to campaign in that state for the Senator in his absence.

Rick Santorum has been a hot and cold candidate in the ever-changing field of the Republican Primaries. In Iowa, he gathered enough support to win that state’s primary and gather enough political steam to be recognized by the media as serious contender for wins in other states. Thus far, however, those wins have eluded him. Two days ago, Santorum reportedly left Florida to return to his Pennsylvania home to file his income tax returns.

Santorum and his wife, Karen, have eight children.
