“Don’t Say Gay” Video Kids Are My Heroes

cohdra 100 4444 300x224 Dont Say Gay Video Kids Are My HeroesOK, the kids and their parents. By now you’ve probably seen this video — it’s been making the rounds all over the YouFaces, but I wanted to share it again to say, 1. kudos to the parents for raising some seriously awesome kids, and 2. well done, boys, well done.

It’s a short, simple video with a powerful … punch. I can’t stand when I hear kids use the word gay as a pejorative. “This is gay, that is gay, everything is gay gay.” As the video says, it is mean, and it is offensive. Would you use any other group of people to say something is not to your liking? Of course not. But it’s such a popular saying that I don’t think many people stop to think about it, so to have kids talking to kids on a level they can relate to, that seems like the building block for some serious change down the line. I like it.

I don’t like it. Hitting? That’s not how we want our children to deal with this. This video sends the wrong message.

I love it!

My maiden name is Gay and until I was in 5th grade Gay meant happy. Then I was teased mercilessly until I stood up for myself. The only “gay” my kids will ever use is when they speak about their KiKi and pawpaw and that’s always a good thing.

Yeah, not too sure this is a video I want my son watching. Why is it okay for the other boy to slap him, or to call him stupid! Epic failure with posting this video Babble.

Wow. Our ideas of an “epic” fail are pretty far apart…

I do see the point re: hitting but doesn’t this only open up two avenues for discussion: homophobia and hitting? More talking equals good.

Tricia, thanks for the timeline info on the transformation of the word gay. I remember singing the kukabura song and not thinking anything of it but now kids snort and chuckle at it.

Love it but the hitting makes me a little uncomfortable too

It’s a good point, but this video promotes violence to get your point across, NOT GOOD!!! There are ALWAYS better ways to make a point than using violence.
