Being Pregnant
Apparently, it’s the gamey taste that’s so enticing.
According to this local paper, Alison Breirley, an artist and taxidermist living in North Yorkshire in the UK, has developed a bizarre craving for fresh roadkill during her pregnancy.
Since she’s already in the habit of scouting for these strewn-about, recently deceased forest animals, her craving has been relatively easy to sate. She’s even had some roadkill dinner parties which her friends– amenable to this alternative food lifestyle– seem to enjoy. Continue reading »
Earlier this week Kate Middleton publicly opted not to eat peanut paste at an event in Copenhagen. I realize this does not sound like a huge deal to most of us common folk, but her decision has sent the media into an absolute flurry.
There have been rumors swirling for a few weeks now that Katie is pregnant and her declination of the peanuts, presumably to reduce the risk of a peanut allergy in her child, only fueled these rumors even more. Her press corp released a statement that she’s not allergic to peanuts, so either she’s developed an aversion, she wasn’t hungry, or she’s following someone’s advice to avoid them. Or, she just doesn’t really like peanuts to begin with.
They happen to be the foods that most women crave most when pregnant. Snack foods, fried foods, and just about anything unhealthy. According to a new U.S. study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the more we eat these high trans-fats foods during pregnancy, the bigger the baby we could have on delivery day.
The study followed 1,400 pregnant women and focused on their LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol) levels. It concluded that the higher the intake of trans-fats, which raises the LDL cholesterol, during the second trimester, the bigger the pregnant woman’s baby was at birth.

So today I got a call from my midwife with the results from my 28 week blood work and it’s not super great news. On the one hand, it explains a lot about what I’ve been feeling lately. On the other hand, my desire for a home birth is at risk again.
My iron levels were low. Very low. A full point below the cut off for a home birth. My levels were at a 9.8 and 10.8 is the minimum their backup physician will approve for a home birth. So I am on a pretty strict supplementation schedule to raise my iron levels up again (they were a 12.1 at the first trimester blood work) so I will be able to have a home birth.
On top of that, my blood sugar levels were rather low as well. The very lowest side of still-normal at the time of testing. Which means my body is using up the food I eat within 2 hours and then has nothing left. And here I thought I was tired because I was so busy!

Hey Babblers!
Tomorrow I will be 17 weeks pregnant. That means that my baby is about the size of an turnip and it’s even got fingerprints! Next Tuesday we’ll be finding out our baby’s sex and I’m just about half-way through this pregnancy. But despite all of these milestones, there is one thing missing: a baby bump.
I’ve only gained a couple of pounds despite the fact that I’m eating more food more often and have removed everything low-fat (except skim milk. I just can’t stand the thicker stuff). You’d think that eating lots of real buter, steak, eggs, etc would help, but it’s apparently not doing the trick.
Sometimes I can’t help but wonder: Is there really a baby in there?
