Being Pregnant
Things are getting pretty cramped up in here. At 37 weeks it’s hard to imagine possibly having any more room in my body for baby to grow any bigger. Breathing is pretty difficult and half the time it feels like my heart (and my lunch!) is in my throat.
Because of this newfound discomfort I began wondering…what really happens to all those vital organs when you’re pregnant? So obviously I googled it and stumbled upon a video via the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry that was simultaneously cool and creepy.
Seriously? Where did my intestines go?

Not to be confused with the man cold, the pregnancy cold simply sucks because the standard cold remedies and over-the-counter meds are unable to be taken when one has a womb-mate.
Jackson has been battling the snots for about 2 weeks now, and it wasn’t until I came down with this cold that I realized he had actually been sick with his own little cold.

Check this woman out: She’s 40 weeks and 3 days pregnant WITH TWINS and has taken it upon herself to induce labor by dancing. The song? Well, you just have to see it.
Her partner joins in and all I can say this is a much more pleasant way to induce labor than castor oil. Or pitocin.
Watch it. Be inspired. Go into labor.

I’m one of those women who enjoyed an easy pregnancy and loved giving birth, hard as it was– I look back on the time of becoming a new mother nostalgically. However, I was really thrown by the “recovery period.” Luckily there was a very compelling baby to distract me from my aches and ‘roids. But from time-to-time I felt just solidly wiped by the whole ordeal.
I don’t want to freak anyone out– some women honestly don’t find recovery all that bad–but I do want to share my tips for making those sore parts a little less sore and just generally getting through the transition.

My current anxiety relief, with a side of prenatal yoga.
Think of any word or phrase to follow “Pregnancy is…” and I doubt “calming” is the first thing that comes to mind. (If it does, yay for you! and me.)
It’s safe to say that I am a very anxious person. I worry and then analyze. Then I worry a little more and then I over-analyze. It’s a cycle, and one that I’ve grown fairly used to. This of course means that my husband and son have grown to become used to it as well. So imagine their awesome surprise to find me actually chilling out during this pregnancy. Amazing, right?

A family-friendly c-section? Yes!
Recently I wrote about radio music playing during a c-section. The post generated some discussion: Several moms found the music either pleasant, funny or irrelevant; some brought their own tunes for planned cesareans. One women wrote in that she had to endure “We Built This City” by Starship (groan) during the birth of her son. A friend told me that she felt like she had been wheeled into an auto-shop; mechanics “worked on” her with Top 40 hits blaring.
The same day I posted on this topic, a childbirth educator I know sent me a fascinating video all about mother-friendly c-sections: Doctors and nurses in a UK hospital have taken it upon themselves to reverse this “auto-shop” trend, and find ways to be more considerate of parents and babies during c-sections.

My husband and I will be taking a road trip this weekend. We’ll be driving from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver B.C. and the trip will be quite lengthy.
We took a road trip to San Francisco over the summer and even though I was only three months pregnant at the time, I wish I’d been more prepared. I spent a lot of the trip being uncomfortable and feeling gross from the sub par food choices I was making.
Now at 6 months pregnant, I’ve learned my lesson and I’m planning ahead. I’ve come up with My Top 9 Pregnancy Road Trip Essentials that will make this trip a better one than the last.
