Being Pregnant
Babymoons: Yay or Nay?
Let’s discuss the babymoon.
“Babymoon!?” you may be thinking. “What the heck is a babymoon?”
A babymoon is kind of like a honeymoon – a big vacation – but it happened before the main event, not afterwards. A babymoon is an opportunity for expectant parents to escape their everyday lives, be romantic, and enjoy being ‘two’ before they become ‘three’ (or four or five or six).
Did the travel industry just make this up? Well, maybe. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to go on a babymoon!
Babymoons are usually a bit more relaxing than your typical jam-packed, sightseeing-whirlwind vacation. Think: a spa experience, a sandy beach, a quiet cabin in the woods. After all, momma is usually well into her second trimester and isn’t up for tons of action.
When I first mentioned the concept of a babymoon to my husband, he jumped at the excuse to go on vacation. But as the weeks wore on, the idea seemed less and less appealing. After all, we have the biggest expense of our live looming and there are only so many dollar bills in our bank account. All the money we’d ‘saved’ for the babymoon really needed to go towards more practical things, like diapers.
We weren’t willing to ditch the idea completely, of course. In the end, we decided to combine one of my work trips to Miami with a babymoon. We’ll fly down two days early and spend two night on South Beach; then, I’ll get my work stuff done. This plan isn’t quite as fun as a week-long resort-style vacation, but it’s something, and it fits our needs and lifestyle perfectly.
Are you going on a babymoon?

Talia commented on Feb 14 12 at 8:49 amI first heard about babymoons from the TV show “Chuck”! I went on one while 28 weeks pregnant; one last fun vacation before the whirlwind of a new baby, and it was wonderful. My husband and I went to someplace we’d never been before, San Diego, (we’re in the midwest) for a few days, then to visit my college friend whose wedding I’d be missing because of my due date. If you have the ability, I’d definitely recommend a getaway before baby. Even a weekend away to relax and spend time with your spouse.
Beth commented on Feb 14 12 at 9:27 amI would love to, but we can’t justify the expense. I’m thinking of surprising my husband with the house to ourselves for a weekend while I send the kids to grandmas though. A staycation instead!
Taz commented on Feb 14 12 at 10:20 amWe went on one very soon after we found out we were expecting. I was in my first trimester and we went to Miami. It was a lot of fun, but a little sad for me to look just chubby but not pregnant on the beach!
MB commented on Feb 14 12 at 11:23 amWe did not do a babymoon the first time, but with my second pregnancy we took our son to Disneyland as his babymoon, since it will be our last family vacation for a while and his last as an only child.
Rachel @ The Lazy Christian commented on Feb 14 12 at 11:31 amWe didn’t go on a babymoon the first time, but we went for one this time. We just got a room at a cute little inn in a scenic town over the long MLK weekend. It was so nice to be away for so long (two whole nights!), just the two of us. Very refreshing! And I needed some toddler-free time. :) With the baby coming this year, we probably won’t take a big vacation, so this was a great getaway!
Michelle V. commented on Feb 14 12 at 12:45 pmI went to Peru when I was 12 weeks pregnant, we had already planned the trip long before we got pregnant. If not for that trip, we may have tried to go on a quick jaunt to some place warm but right now my wallet is burning holes!! Babies are expensive!
Matthew Iacopelli commented on Feb 14 12 at 2:23 pmYes, my wife and I went on a Bahamas cruise. We had a great time and would do it again. My wife did have a little queasiness, but not too bad.
Alicia commented on Feb 14 12 at 4:02 pmLike you, Caitlin, I have to go to Florida for work and my husband is tagging along. We’ll have about 2 days of couple time–getting in early the day before I work and leaving late the day after–and dh can explore on his own the day I have to work. I’ll just be 15.5 weeks, so we’re also thinking about a short road trip elsewhere when I’m further along, depending on the finances.
karyn commented on Feb 15 12 at 5:38 amdid it before number one and number two and number three–after that it just wasn’t practical.before number one–wesanibel island in florida for 5 days—lovely and relaxing.before number two we went to a resort for a couple of days and before number three we went to santa fe,by number 4 and 5–who was gonna watch 1,2 and 3???????
Lindsay commented on Feb 15 12 at 3:51 pmWe were feeling the same way about where to spend our hard saved money and in the end decided not to do a big babymoon to a resort. We planned 2 nights in boston …but then my parents invited us to stay at their condo (free) in Myrtle Beach and we found cheap flights so we do get to take a mini vacation
Jen commented on Feb 15 12 at 6:10 pmWe ended up in Mexico at the end of my first trimester. It was a trip we booked right before we found we were pregnant! It was a great get away, and we saved money by getting a deal on Living Social. It was nice to have time together Even though I wasn’t able to have margaritas!
Megan commented on Feb 16 12 at 8:21 pmI am 26 weeks and my husband and I just got back from Maui for our Babymoon and it was worth every penny to lounge, nap and enjoy the sun and the beach. I would recommend a babymoon to everyone!
Tina commented on Feb 18 12 at 11:07 amWe did a weeklong trip to St Thomas at the beginning of my third trimester and it was amazing. Perfect time for my hubs and I to relax, take a vacation we’d been putting off for awhile and enjoy one of our last weeks as a pair. We still got to explore, hike and snorkel with sea turtles and now we can tell our son that he was with us for that too!
There will always be baby/kid expenses that you’ll be able to squeak into your budget but it will be harder to plan a big vacation with just you and your husband once the babe is here.
According to Lara commented on Feb 18 12 at 12:15 pmWe’re doing something similar, Caitlin. I wanted something more glamorous, but to save on costs, we’re just doing a long weekend somewhere warm and sunny but on the same coast :) Hope you guys enjoy!
