Lu commented on Dec 08 11 at 12:16 pmMembrance sweeping works. They did it with my first child and I was in labor two days later.
Natalie commented on Dec 08 11 at 12:59 pmI was induced both times – UGH – Kiwi was suppose to aid in labor as well, although nothing seemed to help me – LOL Good luck and all the best with your birth!! :)
Stephanie commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:01 pmSex worked for me for #2. Stripping membranes didn’t do a thing for #’s 3 or 4. Trying to pamper myself towards the end, since I always go over dates (2 weeks average). Good luck mama! I was preggers for two years in a row. 80 weeks of pregnancy was horrible. But each time, I had to remember that NO woman is pregnant forever, lol ~ even though it felt like it.
MBAMama commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:09 pmEvening primrose oil as recommended by my midwife. A little horizontal tango always helps tooo :)

AmberlyPerkins commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:13 pmFor both pregnancies I used Evening Primrose Oil, Red Raspberry Leaf tea and sex. I swear by all of these in conjunction to one another. First labor was 10 hours second was a whopping 2.5 hours start to finish, BAM. I :) i contribute my fastly dilating cervix to the EPO, must have!
Stacie @ The Divine Miss Mommy commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:16 pmHA! Great post. I knew about some of these but not all of them. I have a group of friends that swear by eggplant (or Eggplant Parmesan).
Misty commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:18 pmI tried spicy foods, eggplant, pineapple, bouncing on a birthing ball, walking and having my membranes swept. I’ll probably skip the food stuff next go-round, but the birthing ball helped relieve some pressure on my hips even if it didn’t cause me to go into labor.
Walking seemed to help the baby drop, especially in the last week or so, and it also gave me something to do to keep me occupied since I was a week overdue and didn’t work after my due date.
I went into labor the day after I had my membranes swept, so I will likely do that again if my doctor thinks it will help! I believe she also said she wanted me to show progress from the week before and be at 2 cm, but I could be remembering that wrong.
Lisa Brown commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:45 pmI was majorly craving pineapple when I was about 8 months along… I ate about 1/2 a pineapple, and it certainly gave me contractions!
Adelina Priddis commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:48 pmwell, I’ve tried sex, spicy foods, membrane sweeping, bumpy car dies, walking and stairs. Nothing worked with my first. My second I don’t remember if we made it to the membrane stripping or not, because she came 3 weeks early, but I did go for a long walk the night I went into labor with her. My 3rd, was a week late, and after trying all of the other stuff, I went with 1Tbs cream of tartar in orange juice. It’s supposed to work like castor oil. Nothing! We finally just had my dr break my water a week late, and she popped right out. Fastest labor EVER!
Mary commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:52 pmI had two boys while living in Finland, my first was two weeks late and the doctors at the hospital recommended short spurts of time in a sauna and also drinking pineapple juice.
Meghan commented on Dec 08 11 at 1:52 pmI took Nipple Stimulation to the extreme when nothing worked, I broke out my Breast Pump and pumped out a few ccs of Colostrum and went into labor within 12 hours!
Elizabeth Braun commented on Dec 08 11 at 2:07 pmFor my first pregnancy I walked almost 6 miles in the July Texas heat (looking back now I realize how stupid I was) needles to say I went into labor that afternoon like two hours after I finished the walk. For the second pregnancy I tried the Castor Oil…was sick as a dog for two days. Unfortunately that didn’t work and I finally had to be induced (my daughter is a stubborn soul). For my third pregnancy I let nature do its thing and baby came on due date and arrived less than 10 minutes after I got to the hospital (he is still an on the go boy and when he decides it’s time to move he wastes no time)
Crafty Mama commented on Dec 08 11 at 2:41 pmMy SIL swears up and down that rubbing evening primrose oil on the cervix will absolutely put you in labor. I was too chicken to try it. The first method always put me in contractions, though. :)
Simone M commented on Dec 08 11 at 3:47 pmWe got them out the same way we put them in ;) Worked every time! Good luck!
jules p commented on Dec 08 11 at 4:28 pmI have to say…that the caster oil and orange was prescribed by my doctor to start my labor. And I promise, as yucky as it tasted, the contractions started 3 hours later. And I was one happy camper.
Mike commented on Dec 08 11 at 4:54 pmI would suggest anyone consult with their doctor before they use Castor Oil for anything. It can be poisonous and produce really bad side effects.
Feeding large amounts of castor oil to prisoners was a part of a form of torture used in medieval Europe…
It does induce smooth muscle contraction, (the muscle in the uterus is smooth muscle), but I am not sure I would want to risk it…
Mike commented on Dec 08 11 at 5:09 pmBTW, I do not like castor oil…
As a paramedic, I have delivered more than a few babies. You would not believe the methods of inducing labor I have heard of/seen…
More info on castor oil as a method of inducing labor….
http://www.bellybelly.com.au/birth/castor-oil-to-induce-labour-is-it-safe-and-does-it-work
According to this piece, it doesn’t work and has serious and uncomfortable side effects. If you don’t take enough to poison yourself. (The castor bean is the source of the poison ricin.)
Mussolini’s fascist state used castor oil as a torture, too.
This article seriously understates the way it was used and the effect it had on victims; as well as the adjuncts to CO the fascists used.
Katy commented on Dec 08 11 at 5:21 pmFor the record, I am NOT a tea drinker either (give me coffee any day of the week), but I’m drinking raspberry leaf tea as recommended by my doula. I actually really like it with a little bit of honey! I was very surprised!
Also, it isn’t supposed to start contractions, but rather prepare the uterus to work more efficiently when labor does start on its own!
Aly Mashrah commented on Dec 08 11 at 5:23 pmI was a week overdue before I had my son, and I spent 3 hours the day before just walking around the park. That night, my contactions started kicking in and I went to the hospital. My cervix wasn’t open at all, so I was induced.
Ames commented on Dec 08 11 at 6:41 pmI don’t like tea but I took the RRL by capsule :)
Sandy a la Mode commented on Dec 08 11 at 7:40 pmim 38 weeks tomorrow and i went to the doc today and made no progress since last week. im still at 1.5 cm dilated, boo! i will be trying some of these techniques this week! ;)
Anastasia @ Eco-Babyz commented on Dec 08 11 at 7:54 pmI danced with my toddler and bounced on a ball the night our baby was born :)
Tiffany Cruz commented on Dec 08 11 at 8:09 pmWe had lots of sex. Totally helped moved things along. I was bound and determined to have my son on the 1st or the end of July, not Aug 12th. He was born Aug 1st. I wanted him to come early because my daughter was starting pre-k on the 15th and I really wanted to have the baby and be home already in a nice routine when she started school. Everything working out perfect.
I can’t wait for you to have your baby! I know you will post lots of adorable photos :)
Linda Kish commented on Dec 09 11 at 12:42 amI work and walked up until 2 days before my due date and then continued walking after I stopped working. My son was born a week late. I didn’t bother trying anything to hurry things along though.
Hannah B commented on Dec 09 11 at 12:46 amMine was 2 weeks overdue and nothing I tried seemed to help. I could have sworn the kid was never coming out! I had my inlaws there for a month, wanting to be there when the big event happened (first grandchild). As soon as they got on the plane to go home, I went into labor.
Eileen commented on Dec 09 11 at 3:41 amI had 6 kids and although weeks late with two of them and NOT having my days mixed up at all…I definitely remember thinking I HAD to do something. With my daughter the second late one, I wanted to try castor oil…something my mom had done 30 years earlier for my brother. I could not even think of swallowing that stuff. So just waited it out both times.
BUT, I have a daughter who a few months ago started searching for ways to start labor. Her health plan was changing and they were so hoping to have their baby before the New Year. The health insurance change would cost them well over a grand besides leaving a glitch in her time off for maternity leave/vacation with pay too. Her date was anytime from Dec. 29 to Jan 12, so she thought the last week after Christmas she would enlist the help of some if not most of these natural induction ideas. Unfortunately, she ended up having her little guy 11 weeks early and only at 1 lb 15 oz due to complications. She feels now that no matter what, she would wish he would have had more time. He is now 5 weeks old and just over 3 lbs. Be careful what you wish for:)
Mary Baker commented on Dec 09 11 at 11:23 amWe went on a rough mountain trail ride. I wanted a girl, and she was late. I got my girl, but she took her time, and still does!
Leandra commented on Dec 09 11 at 1:07 pmACUPUNCTURE! The best induction method available! Sex, bouncing on a ball walking, sweeping of membranes, spicy foods, bumpy car rides, etc etc…tried them all with my first but went into labor after doing NOTHING, just watching a movie! I had given up. With our second, I was a week overdue with a very large baby & had a friend do some acupuncture. I had contractions while the needles were in & they didn’t stop. I had the baby within 24 hours. Have known several people for which acupuncture helps to balance the chi & restore what is needed to swiftly move into labor. Acupuncture also aided in giving birth to our 10 pound 9 ounce 24 inch-long son naturally. Highly recommended!
Voice of Reason commented on Dec 10 11 at 12:45 amI think all the well known ones have been covered… except reflexology. I hear that’s worth a shot. Good luck!
Caress Lepore commented on Dec 11 11 at 10:37 amI was due June 26 2010. I went to the doctor that Wednesday and had my membrane swept. I lost my mucus plug Thursday morning and had my daughter Friday. One day before I was due.
Courtney commented on Dec 11 11 at 12:54 pmFoot massage!! Totally got my kid out after 41 WEEKS of pregnancy!! I tried eggplant parmesan, pineapple, walking, stairs, food that was spicy beyond all reason and NOTHING worked. At my nephews soccer game a friend of my sister-in-laws who is a massage therapst saw how miserable I was (I didnt know it but I had a 9 lb 12 oz boy hanging out in ym uterus) and offered me a foot massage to out me into labor. She hit all these different pressure points and the next day I was in the hospital. It’s now my number 1 reccomended labor-inducing activity.
Rich commented on Dec 11 11 at 9:11 pmWe tried loads and none worked. We ended up with an emergency c section with our first. My wife and child nearly. Very scary. The second just never got started and once again Anna had a c. She felt useless and a failure. Thankfully through encouragement and support she now sees things differently. Guys whatever works, do it for your best friend and if it doesn’t be there for them.
kerri commented on Dec 11 11 at 10:38 pmWith my first I mowed the lawn on a warm day and went into labor by 2AM.
Loretta commented on Dec 11 11 at 11:10 pmI wish I had known about acupuncture, maybe it would have helped!
I had my son in June 2011 – induction at 42 weeks! I waited and waited, trusting Nature would do her part. I was so huge when I went for long walks that the ranger in the park was following to make sure I was not going into labor LOL. I tried dancing, labor tincture, primerose oil, spicy food, sex, nipple stimulation, membrane sweeping. Nothing worked. Didn’t try eggplant nor pineapple though. Castor oil seemed too brutal for me. My son was big, 9 lbs 10 oz, why didn’t he come naturally? Nature has its ways… But you should give these methods a try, you never know!
countrylife4me commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:14 pmNo. I didn’t use or do anything. It’s all in God’s timing and the baby will be born when completely ready. Unless of course something is wrong with mother or baby. God’s timing is best.
