TED Speaker & Mathematician Is Awed By What A Woman’s Body Can Do
Birth from the inside out.
I encourage anyone one who is pregnant or who works with pregnant women to watch this video. It’s a quickie TED clip featuring mathematician and image-maker, Alexander Tsiaras, talking about the wonders of gestation and birth.
To illustrate all this wonder, he made an incredible video showing the growth of a baby from conception to birth. It’s amazing for a bunch of reasons (the miracle of life!), but I especially enjoyed the animated sequence of a baby being born –you can really see how the baby rotates in the pelvis and emerges. (The still to the left is from the film.)
What I also loved about this talk is the breathless awe this academic has for the entire process of pregnancy. Tsiaras says that even though he’s a mathematician he can only stand back and marvel at the incredible number of tiny calculations the body has to make to get this job done.
He is so awed, in fact, that he says he can’t help but use the word, “divinity.” This seems beyond the possibilities of science and nature.
“The magic of the mechanisms inside each genetic structure saying exactly where that nerve cell should go– the complexity of these, the mathematical models of how these things are indeed done are beyond human comprehension. Even though I’m a mathematician, I look at this with a marvel of how did these instruction sets not make mistakes as they build what is us. It’s a mystery, its magic, its divinity.”
I’m not religious which makes me understand all the more what he’s talking about. It’s is pretty amazing that a woman can transform into “a walking immunological cardiovascular system that basically is a mobile system that can actually nurture…” Beyond human comprehension indeed.

It is beyond comprehension that we can create life inside of our bellies. Not to get too much into religion, but the incredible, life giving powers that we have as women truly strengthen my belief in God.
