Advice for Your First Infertility Appointment
Last week, when we met with our Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) for the first time and those minutes in his office just flew by.
I learned when we went through infertility over five years ago that the number of times that you’ll be face to face with your RE are fewer than you’d think.
So, what’s my number one piece of advice for that first meeting?
Go into your appointment with as much knowledge as possible.
I have three main reasons for this…
- You’ll be lucky to get even 45 minutes with your RE. You won’t want to waste time on the most basic aspects of infertility when time is that precious.
- Your RE will see that you have taken the time to educate yourself and that you are prepared to work as partners in your treatment.
- By educating yourself, you will know the right questions to ask and will understand more fully the terminology that your RE throws your way.
Here are some of the best infertility resources to help you gather information as you educate yourself before your appointment…
I would begin by visiting RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association’s website. From general infertility education to more specific, advanced information, RESOLVE has a bevy of resources.
Once you have spent some time at RESOLVE, I would explore Redbook’s Infertility Blogroll, where you will find more personal accounts from women who understand the emotional and physical toll that infertility takes on those who are trying to conceive.
Infertility can be so incredibly isolating. Reading about others may help you to remember that you aren’t alone.
It’s so important that you are your own advocate as you pursue infertility treatments. Knowing the terminology and preparing yourself with the right questions will likely help you feel as though you have at least some control on your infertility journey.
