Being Pregnant
Is There Room at Your Table?
One of my best friends is due to have her first baby in the next 3 weeks. I can’t begin to put in to words how stinkin’ excited I am for her and her husband. They are going to be such incredible parents.
Anyway, we hung out with them over the weekend, and as per usual, when you get two pregnant women together, all things turn to baby talk.
We heard about her birth plan, she asked questions about nipples falling off when breast feeding (or at least feeling like they’re falling off), he husband asked about sleepless nights.
Both my husband and I *try* to keep our filters in check when it comes to offering advice or answering parenting questions. No one has “the right answer.”
But when you are talking to one of your best friends on the planet, the filter fades quickly.
During the conversation between the 4 of us (when Jackson wasn’t interrupting), my friend asked me if I felt like I would be done with kids after this one.
To be honest, I hadn’t given it that much thought yet. And I told her that. Both my husband and I each have one sibling, so I think it’s safe to say that we’re open to the idea of more than 2 kids… but you never know, ya know?
I then told my friend about something I read a few years ago. I read a parenting article (no idea which publication the article was in) about how/if you ever really know that your family is “complete.” I will always remember this article because a woman was quoted as saying that she knew her family was complete when she felt like her dinner table was full.
When I shared that with my friend, she teared up. “What a lovely way to put it,” she said to me. I agree.
It really is quite beautiful to think about. Everyone has different dining tables in their homes, different numbers of seats, some including high chairs and boosters, some not, and others have benches like picnic tables. All different, all unique.
What is your dining table like? Is it full? Room for more?

Lisa commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:38 pmOur dining table has four chairs at it. When both girls are big enough to sit in chairs they will all be full. And I, feel like my family is full too. I always envisioned myself with 2 kids. I have 4 brothers and truly have no desire to have a large family (been there done that). I know my husband is kind of interesting in trying for a boy, but we’ll see who wins that argument. For now, I think I’m done. I’m happy, I’m complete.
Nadia commented on Oct 18 11 at 7:26 pmI need to buy a bigger dining table! Our current one is a hand-me-down from my sister-in-law, who previously used it as a desk. I want a huge family. I am going to need a bigger table!
