Being Pregnant
My 3-Year-Old Named the Baby
Introducing, the next member of our family, to arrive in April 2012… Pickle.
Jackson named the baby while at Target this weekend, in the pickle aisle.
Then he tickled my belly and repeated, “Tickle Pickle! Tickle Pickle!”
Shortly after, I died of love.
Because truly, what could be more adorable than your child picking out the name for your next child? So precious, right?
I dunno, maybe this will backfire on me entirely, but c’mon!!!
It’s just completely endearing that our 3 year old son named the baby, Pickle. It’s endearing to me that he named the baby ANYTHING, really. I’m super sappy about it, if you can’t tell.
My husband will veto the name, I’m sure. But for now, I kinda love it.
And really, it’s not even about the name… just the fact that one kiddo acknowledged the other. To me, that’s awesome.
Pickle it is!
(For now.)
Has your child(ren) participated in the naming process? Have you chosen names that all members of the family are on board with? What are your favorite naming stories?

ABC commented on Oct 10 11 at 11:10 amMy sister picked my name. She is 4 1/2 years older, and my parents let her choose between Amy, Ashley & Sarah. Yes, they were quite original in their naming choices for this ’80s baby. My sister picked Ashley, and here I am! I kind of love that she helped pick my name :)
Amber commented on Oct 10 11 at 11:34 amMy son wants to name our daughter Batman. I can’t quite get him to understand that’s not even in the realm of possibilities!
mybottlesup commented on Oct 10 11 at 1:58 pm@ABC- i think it’s sweet that your sister helped to pick your name. and i like the idea of offering a few to choose from and having the sibbling pick from there. thanks for the suggestion.
@AMBER- hahaha! maybe he can call her batman while she is in utero? once she is out of mommy’s belly, mommy and daddy pick the name? i dunno… grasping at straws here. good luck!
Brittany commented on Oct 11 11 at 4:30 amWe had several people try to tell us what to name our baby. From his family pushing for a Scottish name, to my family pushing to name the baby after someone in the family. No. No one picked out our baby’s name but us. Especially not a four or two year old.
Zoë commented on Oct 14 11 at 10:25 amMy son pretty much named his youngest sister. We kind of threw the name Violet out there and he said “That’s it! That’s what we should call her!” (and yes, it had everything to do with The Incredibles). We never settle on a name until we meet our babies, and take a big list with us, but sure enough, in the hospital, we narrowed it down to Lucy or Violet. Of course, we had to go with Violet because it was her big brother’s choice. He is absolutely over the moon that he got to “name” his baby sister.
JTook commented on Oct 14 11 at 11:44 amMy sister named her first child (while still pregnant), Cletus. You know, Cletus the Fetus. She thought she was funny. Other people just thought she was weird. I like Pickle. It can be a nickname :)
jae commented on Oct 27 11 at 9:13 ammy older brother gave my older sister her middle name: “prell”…as in the shampoo. because he saw a commercial and insisted he wanted her to have hair like the girl in the commercial. tres interessante.
Debbi commented on Nov 20 11 at 8:23 amWe named our son Reylend and wanted his middle name to start with a J like our older son and my husband. So we let our older son choose the middle name he went with the same as his (Joshua) but spelled different (Joshewa).
