07 300x208 How To Capture Simple Heartfelt Newborn PhotosThere is one cliché uttered when you have a baby that rings painfully, and undeniably true.

They grow up too fast.

After browsing Babble’s Digital Photography Guide this week, I felt inspired to offer some simple tips to help you capture beautiful, heartfelt photographs of your new baby in the comfort of your own home.

Professional photo sessions are great, but you don’t need fancy props, complicated lighting, or expensive equipment to create gorgeous photo memories.

Grab your camera, and follow these 10 simple tips to achieve stunning results!

01 How To Capture Simple Heartfelt Newborn Photos

Use Natural Light
Utilizing natural light is absolutely key when photographing babies. Turn off your flash, and photograph your baby near a window or open door. This is the most important tip I can offer to anyone hoping to achieve beautiful portraits of their child.

They do grow too fast! My 5th is 11 months today! I have always been horrible at taking pics but my 16 year old daughter is a natural! She is already working on a gallery showing and planning her Senior project around photography. She has taken some awesome shots of the baby for me, and I had her read this post. She loved it…Thank you.

I love these tips and all the photos but my favorite tip is about the things you never think of and that is the little toes and finger and ears. Sweet thank you so much for sharing! :)

Stephanie Phelps commented on Oct 04 11 at 11:48 am

You are truly an inspiration, all of the great things you are doing! But not to mention you often share with me, new information, like I totally wish I had known you when I was pregnant with my last child, keep up the fantastic work!

Rose Powell commented on Oct 04 11 at 11:48 am

I used to do photojournalism in the early 1990′s for a collectibles magazine, back when we were still doing film. The best advantage photographers have today with digital is that you don’t have to wait to see if you got the shot. Combine that with your expert tips and amateur photographers should all be able to get that special shot with much less expense and mistakes!

I had a preemie nearly 2 years ago. How I wish I had known these tricks at that time, or had someone to help us with photographing our tiny one. Money was tight right then and I didn’t hire anyone to take photos(not to mention that it was right in the H1N1 season and no one could come near her). I know so much more now about photography, even in that short time period. I love reading what the pros have to say about photographing newborns/babies. Thanks for the tips. ( I LOVE the heart hands with the tiny toes….perfect lighting and composition!)

I love photographing babies. Some of my favourite shots are extreme close ups of hands and feet, and babies – in part or in whole – next to real world objects for scale. My husband and I are huge gamers, and one of my fave newborn photos of my son is him up against an Xbox controller.

Maranda commented on Oct 04 11 at 6:55 pm

I love using natural light. It feels more intimate. When I look back at the pictures it feels as strong as the memory itself, not a cheap imitation.

He’s 12 now. And no, he does not love to be the subject being photographed. ;-)

How adorable! I wish I had known about all these tricks when my boys were little. Guess I’ll have to pass them on for the grandkids!

Andrea Williams commented on Oct 04 11 at 8:18 pm

As a photog and mama myself, I couldn’t agree more with your tips!!! Not that I don’t love others’ work of teeny newborns in a tub outside, but to me, that is now how your baby looked. It is beautiful and artistic and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want any of those sweet photos, but the ones I love best are the most simple ones I and my husband took of our son when he was a teeny tiny squishy baby!

Wonderful tips! I know with my youngest (11 mos on Snday already!!) I tried to remember to do all these things, but there’s always that nagging, “I should’ve done this” or “I should’ve done that” – especially with my older ones (15 & 4). Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos and tips with us!

These are some great tips. I agree with the at home pictures. With our first we had a professional come do a photoshoot for WAY to much money. I did the photos for my second and they are just as beautiful and it was great to do it during his happy time and not have to guess when that would be when scheduling the photoshoot.

I loved your tip about using natural light & turning off your flash to take pictures by windows or an open door!! Awesome article & tips!

Those are great tips. We used some of the cute baby blankets we got as gifts for easy backdrops. Free and lovely.
