Miscarriage: Understanding the Why
For many women, myself included, it can be very important for our grieving process to understand why a miscarriage happened. It is estimated that 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage with most of those occurring within the first trimester (12 weeks).
Personally I was very focused on the WHY. It wasn’t very simple for my story because I ended up having a few factors that contributed to my 10 losses. I felt relieved when I understood the why – that it wasn’t something I was doing wrong.
Often times the cause of miscarriage can not be determined, though most miscarriages in the first trimester are thought to be a result of a chromosomal abnormality.

Elizabeth commented on Sep 26 11 at 12:29 pmI never knew why my miscarriage happened, and I’m not sure if that knowledge would have helped me feel any better about it. I had one, early miscarriage. I always thought it was likely due to chromosomal abnormalities, as I was close to 40 and the probabilities were high.
My next pregnancy resulted in a healthy birth. However, had I suffered multiple, repeated miscarriages or a stillbirth, I’m sure I would have been hell bent on determining why. There can be a lot of value to that knowledge, especially if the cause is something that can be addressed.

Elizabeth Petrucelli commented on May 21 12 at 12:55 pmMiscarriage is so common. 1 in 5 women will experience one. I had never had one until 2010 when I lost my daughter in the first trimester. There wasn’t a single book on the market specific to first trimester miscarriage but now there is! I wrote my memoir of my loss and it is so helpful. If you are still suffering or have recently suffered a loss in the first trimester, I am certain my book will help you. You will be able to relate to it in so many ways! The book is called “All That is Seen and Unseen; A Journey Through a First Trimester Miscarriage.” It can be bought on Amazon in paperback and Kindle as well.
