Being Pregnant
My Baby Name Story … And Ten More!

Here's the whiteboard in my recovery room. Earlier it was filled with a handful of names. At the time of the picture, just variations on the same name.
When we were pregnant with our first, we absolutely could not decide on a name. We were one of those couples that had to provide a name in order to leave the hospital. And then once he did have a name, we changed it a bit.
Early on in the pregnancy, I mentioned the name “Oskar” because it’s the name of the main character in one of my favorite books by one of my favorite contemporary authors—and I wouldn’t mind having a little boy quite like Oskar Schell: he’s spirited, sensitive, smart, imaginative and funny. And totally lovable. In fact, that character actually made me want to have a boy … someday.
But my husband didn’t seem too into it, so we moved on.
In the recovery room, I was surprised to hear the name come up again—this time from my husband. We looked at each other like, “Can we really get away with naming our child Oskar? Will he be taken seriously? Will it work when he’s in high school? And what about as an adult?” We decided that it would work if we wanted it to work.
Now, I love telling people his name (despite/because of mixed reviews), and nobody ever forgets it—even if we’ve only met them once.
As I’ve said before, I love a good baby-name story, traditional or no. Read ten more baby-name stories—including another baby Oscar, and names inspired by Vlad the Impaler, hockey stars and more authors following the jump.Sometimes I think getting inquiries as to how you came up with a name means you made a good choice. But it’s undoubtedly a fine line. Read more “How We Chose Our Baby’s Name” stories here.
