The Novogratz Name Game
Bob and Cortney Novogratz know how to come up with an original name, like it or not.
“Robert” and “Cortney” are names normal enough, but the reality TV stars/interior designers from Bravo’s “Nine By Design” and now HGTV’s “Home by Novogratz” got creative in naming their own kids—and there are seven of them. (And one of them is named “Five.” And their design company is named “Sixx.”)
A recent post suggested that the most popular baby names trickle down from our upper-class neighbors, rather than movie or pop stars. The Novogratz crew isn’t short on cash and they are stars in their own right, but I don’t see their monikers making the top 20 list anytime in the next decade, or two. And I mean that in a good way. I tend to like their names, partially because I think they’re likeable people.
So how did the Ma and Pa Novogratz come up with distinctive (divisive?) names like “Wolfie,” “Bellamy,” “Tallulah,”"Breaker,” “Holleder,” and the infamous, “Five”? In a story yesterday on iVillage, they revealed their method. The names come from a desire to be meaningful and original, and also to be true to themselves and do what feels right. Their only hard-fast rule is that the children’s middle names come from family.
