My Less-Than-$1000 Nursery
The room where my baby grew up. Special, but not pricey.
My husband was in graduate school and our funds were really tight when our first kid was born, two-and-a-half years ago. We wanted to make his room special without out spending too much, and gave ourselves a budget of $1,000 to put something together—which is the cost for a crib, alone, these days.
Spend less, and you might like it more. With some careful shopping and a little vision, not to mention compromise, we did it. And so can you! Here’s how:

Nay commented on Aug 15 11 at 6:55 pmYeah, I like everything but the crib too, but for a different reason. (I have an old-timey rocking chair that’d match it, though.) For me, the furniture has to last until the kids move out. I have one dresser already, just need a convertible crib and a similar bookcase (we have 4 along the same lines, but the wrong color and already full.) Good finds, though…
Lauren commented on Aug 15 11 at 7:31 pmMy goodness – it’d be nice to have $1000 to spend on a nursery! It looks nice, but to me this isn’t a nursery “without spending too much”…it’s on the upper limit, and well beyond reasonable.
Jessica commented on Aug 15 11 at 8:06 pmNot all drop-sides have been recalled from what I’ve read–really haven’t read more than new crib regulations/ ban. There is a ban on the drop-side cribs ,and it’s recommended they be destroyed or used as toddler bed if they convert to daybed. If the crib was purchased after June 28th, it was an illegal purchase. (and felony , I think). Even if it has the “fix” to make it stationary sided, it’s still not appropriate for resell, donate, or purchase. If it was from a previous child, it would be personal property and nothing to report for it being used since keeping one isn’t illegal, just not recommended.
Sara commented on Aug 15 11 at 8:43 pmIt’s cute. I like the color scheme and I appreciate someone who doesn’t feel compelled to spend a lot of money on a nursery. So many people think they have to have designer baby rooms in order to impress other people. Babies don’t care about color schemes, designer furniture, and whether or not there is cool artwork on the walls.
We spent under 200 on our crib and bought thirty dollars worth of second hand wall hangings. I put vintage children’s book illustrations in ikea frames for under ten dollars. I bought a changing pad for twenty dollars and put it on the dresser. The dresser was a hand me down. We were gifted with an old fashioned wooden rocker that worked just fine for us.
The room didn’t look designer but it was a functional nursery.
Brigette commented on Aug 15 11 at 8:58 pmI have the same garbage cans around the house! one in the lounge for my daughters toys (we couldn’tfind any toy boxes we actually liked), one in the bedroom that we use for the dirty nappies, and one for washing. They’re cute and handy, I’m not so much into the ‘babyish’ stuff, and I want to continue using things after my daughter gets a bit older.

Not many people can say they bought everything new and spent less than $1000. Plus your color scheme and artwork is way better than a lot of pricey nurseries I’ve seen. Way to go!

And now he has just asked me “What’s the real name for a baby room?” I think we’ll be calling our someday-nursery the “pantry.”
Morgan commented on Oct 25 11 at 3:42 pmA $1,000 nursery??? Now that is not what I’d call a nursery on a budget. We have put ours together piece by piece, and now that our little guy is 9 months, he has a pretty rad room, all for the cost of paint and some under $5 knick-knacks here and there. Oh wait, we already had the paint.
Granted, we’ve gone cribless because we share sleep, and we happened to have a lot of nursery appropriate things already part of our decor arsenal, but I really and truly believe that anyone can make a special, whimsical, awesome nursery for their babycakes for way under $1,000, even with a crib. C’mon people, flex those creative muscles for your babies!
