Being Pregnant

Sleepless on the Second Floor

This looks nice.

I’ve heard the second trimester called the best (easiest?) trimester. Ideally, morning sickness has come to a close, and you’re not so big as to be uncomfortable all the time. I’m in the supposedly restful zone of 18 weeks, but I still don’t manage to sleep like I should.

This week brought me some sticky conjunctivitis (gross), a canker sore from Hades, and spine-shaking drilling of my molar. But these aren’t my real problems, of course. I might not be dry-heaving or huge but in this sunny second trimester, sleep isn’t coming easy.

Anyone else have this problem, already? Here’s what’s keeping me up at night:

1. It seems I was buying ovulation sticks just yesterday, but I’m already nearly half-way through my pregnancy. It’s time to nail down a new doctor with some help from Monica’s post about choosing an OB.

2. Goodbye nausea, hello heartburn. Keep focusing on the no-nausea part, and stock up on Tums.

3. As far as I’m concerned, apartment living is a necessary evil if you’re living in the city. I’m not in DC anymore, and am no longer willing to put up with it. In our search for housing I’d like a little yard, ground-level entry and no upstairs neighbors to wake my napping toddler, please. This needs to be resolved before December. Tick tock!

4. Curl in a ball. No, straighten your legs. Get out of bed and stretch, then double over in pain. Start freaking out about what in the world is going on with this jabbing pain in the right side of my abdomen? Oh, like Holly, it’s just round ligament pain … at 3 a.m.

5. I’m starting to be hungry all the time. Enough so that my tummy rumbles throughout the night.

6. Big shocker: pregnancy makes me a little emotional. I miss my family, I miss my friends, and I start to get homesick. This is complicating number 3 on my list as I’m not certain I want to settle down here, aka buy a home.

7. Take that whole emotional thing and throw in some added stress, and I’m guaranteed to get a little grouchy from time to time. I nit-pick at my husband, and then we argue. Then I feel guilty and lose sleep, even after I apologize.

8. And speaking of guilt, I’m already worrying about how I will love my Oscar as well as a new baby. How will I give them both the attention they deserve?

9. I’m excited with anticipation. But this can also lead to anxiety. I’ve got a lot to do in the next 22-or-so weeks!

10. Ah, the silver lining. I love grabbing my husband’s hand in the middle of the night and pressing it to my stomach so he can feel the little thump, thump, thump, of our growing peanut. Is there a better feeling than the first kicks from a baby? I love the reassurance. For now, I don’t mind if these happy movements keep me up all night.

Anything I’m forgetting? Don’t even get me started on how often I have to pee….

Well, I can offer you some recommendations for some of the problems you’ve raised: STRESS: Using a meridian based technique you can do yourself and its free called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). It’s an ever evolving science and many are now referring to it as MTT (Meridian Tapping Technique). A plethora of resources on it, here’s a good one to start with, http://www.shekinahbirthing.com/eft.html. SLEEPLESSNESS: Actually, you can use EFT for that also. The other suggestion is Tart Cherry Juice concentrate. Almost impossible to find at health food stores, I’ve never seen it in a regular supermarket. What they all have is diluted with all kinds of different things. That won’t work. Needs to be 100% tart cherry juice concentrate. It’s natural, works miracles for any kind of inflammation in the body, is an immunity booster, and helps people sleep better. I buy mine here: http://www.brownwoodacres.com. CANKER SORE: Another miracle remedy, Canker Sores Begone. (It’s nontoxic, BTW). My cankers are gone within a couple of days. http://www.cankersoresbegone.com. For the rest of your problems, my RX is: the passage of time, 4.5 months! Congrats, love your description of the feeling of movement of the baby in your belly.

This horribly awful heat wave in the mid west!! This pregnant lady can’t take all the heat + humidity!
