firsttrimesterbump 225x300 What I Miss About Not Being Pregnant

This is me and my barely bump in all of our first trimester, post-10-hour-day-spent-with-preschoolers-and-taken-with-my-iphone-at-an-arms-length, photo glory.

Now that I am in the final week of my first trimester, the reality of pregnancy is really setting in.  I’m beginning to realize that all of these little changes I’ve been making for the last 3 months still have to continue for the next six.  Six months is a long time.  Obviously, it’s going to be worth it, because at the end of all of this I’m going to have a baby and that’s will far outweigh the inconveniences of pregnancy (I know, I know…I haven’t seen anything yet – the third trimester is looming in the distance).

BUT…that doesn’t mean that I don’t miss some of my pre-pregnancy routines and indulgences.  I’m only human.

Here’s my little list of things I miss and wish I would’ve appreciated a little more prior to getting knocked up…

1.  Not reading the labels on my beauty products and slathering them on care free.

2.  Real zit cream and dandruff shampoo.  This all-natural stuff is crap and I’ve got the flakes to prove it.

3.  Thinking about things other than being pregnant.

4.  Not getting up during the night to pee.  I never got up P.P. (pre-pregnancy) and the adjustment has been rough.

5.  Sushi, turkey sandwiches and feta.  Right now I could totally go for a turkey, feta, spicy tuna sandwich.

6.  Not feeling bloated and getting dressed without worrying about looking like a puffer fish.

7.  Boobs that aren’t sore and fit into fancy lace bras.

8.  Espresso.  I live in Portland – one of the coffee capitals and am sworn off the stuff?  Not awesome.

9.  Summer cocktails.  Mojitos mostly and champagne.  Oh how I miss champagne!

10.  Sleeping comfortably on my stomach and back.  I’m still doing it, but I can only do it for short periods of time.

What do you miss from your pre-pregnancy days?  Feel free to commiserate in the comments section :).

Well, obviously I wasn’t drinking any alcohol or coffee even before I was pregnant (you know me), but I can imagine those would be rough changes. Especially the whole Portland coffee thing. There’s a huge world of culture built around coffee in Portland. Obviously I never really tapped into it, but I of course get that it’s there.

Some of the other stuff you’re avoiding, though, I was surprised by. Maybe I was just a really dumb mom, but I never bothered avoiding tuna or regular shampoo. I think the all natural pregnancy business must be a lot cooler there. Haha. :) But I will say this–it’s totally awesome of you to make sacrifices and be conscious about what you bring into your body. That is true love right there. :) You are already an awesome mom.

-Going into restaruants without wanting to puke…that goes in hand with…eating basically any meal without the urge to puke.

-Taking a drive anywhere the road led without the constant pee breaks or getting car sick.

-Sleeping through the night…I would wake up at 2am and be up for about 3hrs before falling back to sleep.

But you, know…now that I am no longer pregnant, I MISS BEING PREGNANT.
I miss feeling my Monkey swim and dance in my tummy. I miss all the moments that were literally just between us. I miss feeling him have the hiccups. I miss getting way excited running to my husband saying “quick feel here”. I miss seeing my belly get big and preggers in the evening (lol). I miss it! I truely do. I think I miss being pregnant more than I not being so.

You can eat feta cheese! As long as it’s pasteurized, which most of it is. I’m half Greek, if you take my feta away, a little part of me would die…

I miss so many of those things! I’m getting so close now and I’ve already started making a list of things I will need to have during those first few weeks being non-preggo… I want some runny eggs PRONTO and certainly some amazing raw fish sushi and a steak done MED RARE. I’m guessing that the frequent wakings will still be around and the sore boobs aren’t going anywhere for a while. :/

I really admire that you are going the more “all natural” route for your pregnancy. It is so good for you and baby. I did this most of the time throughout my pregnancy, but found it was a bad way (for me) to start some new products. I of course I had get rid of some products that had no-no items in it (ie zit cream), but I ended up needing to bring back a few items due to weird skin reactions. Pineapple enzyme face wash ended up making my skin turn bright red and feel like it was on FIRE.

Being a HEAVY coffee drinker before pregnancy my doc and I talked about caffeine intake and she let me know I could have 12 oz of regular coffee* a day or 1 espresso drink a day (not to drink it with food though because it causes the babe to not get nutrients that I’m taking in). I actually went the route of having 2 decaf coffees a day instead (has a little caffeine BUT tastes like the real thing). Of course, you do what you need to do for you and your baby. :)

Oh, and just in case you are REALLY missing feta I wanted to let you know that the current hubbub over soft cheeses are more for the unpasteurized variety. Most of the feta you’ll find in the store is made from pasteurized milk so you will be more than safe eating it. I still stayed away from Blue Cheese (my fav) after some research, because of the mold in the cheese*. Listeria is also found in deli meats (rare, but true) BUT can be taken care of simply by heating the meat to steaming first. You can even steam a package of deli meat and put in fridge for cold sandwiches later. I avoided it completely until the laziness of pregnancy eating hit and then just steamed packages so I could have a sandwich every now and again.

There is SO much to avoid out there and all the books have so many lists… (My favorite book in the beginning of pregnancy was “The Complete Organic Pregnancy”) But, it can get overwhelming the list of “NOs”. On top of my list I’ve had to follow an eating plan to provide the needed nutrients for baby without adding extra calories to me (before getting pregnant my BMI was in an obese range). I also meet with a nutritionist weekly and have regular baby growth check ups. I’ve learned so much about nutrition and its role in pregnancy. One of the biggest things I can say from my experience is be forgiving of yourself and while you should certainly watch out for baby’s best interests they are still pretty resilient little ones. So, if you need a cup of coffee or really want to take back your shampoo don’t be too hard on yourself… after all 9 months is a LONG time.

I’m 21 weeks and I miss my sushi lunches with the girls and drinking my foofoo girly alcohol drinks!!!

Molly commented on Jul 14 11 at 12:01 pm

1. I always read my labels but I do admit to not being as careful as I could be. I have such dry sensitive skin that I really cant mess with trying new products.

3. I LOVE thinking about being pregnant and setting up the nursery. It gives me something fun to focus on!

4. Wow you are lucky! I always got up at least once to pee PP. But now I have to admit that it sucks getting up 5 times to pee.

5. Eh… no need for sushi… or get veggie sushi for similar taste. Feta is really not a big deal either in the US it is pasteurized. Just look on the package.

7. Your boobs wont hurt as much in the 2nd trimester but you will need to buy another bra or two. Get a lacy one if you want. But for me, I was a 34FF PP. So I didnt really ever have a cute lacy bra. Sigh.

8. So get decaf!

9. So get a virgin!

10. Yeah finding a comfortable sleeping position sucks!

Overall though, I dont see any reason to deprive yourself of things that you love. If you have a taste for an espresso just get a decaf. No reason to hate being pregnant!

I miss my morning routine of slowly sipping a cup of coffee. I’m now 7 months and it was harder in the beginning because of giving up caffine, but not I just really miss my slow, easy mornings before getting ready for work. Come to think of it, I wonder if I’ll ever have those easy mornings again, since I’ll have this little munchkin to care for! The other thing I really miss is just being comfortable. Most of the time (for the past few weeks at least) I’m sore or achey somewhere in my body and sleeping is sort of a challange nowadays. But I’ve had a really healthy pregnancy so far so I don’t complain about the aches and pains because I could be on bed rest or diabetic or who knows what else! Enjoy your next 6 months.

I’m almost 14 weeks! I miss being thin and wearing all of my old clothes (packing them away was the saddest day!) and cooking! The smells are just too much for me! I have been such an unhealthy eater throughout my pregnancy because of aversions and sensitivity to smells! Now I have to go and research because I didn’t know I had to avoid zit creams!! And I have been very zitty!!

It’s good you are already getting nostalgic about your pregnancy ending…before it ends. Just wait til your lungs are getting pummeled. In all honesty, the third trimester in all its glory is nothing compared to the fourth. That fragmented sleep you are getting is training you to modify your sleep patterns now, cause you are not going to be sleeping long stretches for a WHILE. You are going to be recovering from the delivery (unless you have the pelvis of a fertility goddess), and at the same time your new boss (the baby) will have totally unrealistic expectations about “OT” and “on-call”. Forget the peace corps, being a mom is the hardest job you will ever love.

P.S. I think roasted turkey (thanksgiving style) is totally fine if cooked to an adequate internal temperature). Plus then you can freeze the leftovers and have lots of lean protein meals in your freezer so convenient meals don’t need to be unhealthy

I hated having to look at all the labels to make sure I could eat it! It felt like everything was a “no-no.”

I had thought feta was not okay, but my OBGYN said it was fine as long as it was pastuerized. Yay feta!

I think I missed sushi the most though. I ate the imitation crab and some tempura shrimp (which apparently is okay regarding mercury stuff), but couldn’t eat any lovely raw fish… :( OH! The hardest no-no was brownie batter and cookie dough! Seriuosly I had to forcibly restrain myself from licking the bowl after Andy made cookies or brownies.

This was a fun list!

I don’t know what I’ll do if I ever have a babe because everyone has something different to say about cheese and coffee! My mom drank coffee with me and mys sisters, so I’ve always figured I’d go with it still. But I totally understand why people avoid it. I mean … what if the babe doesn’t want to be all jacked up on caffeine? Not her fault :)

I had a delicious virgin mojito at Bridegport Brewery last weekend :) You’re already such a good mama looking out for your little bebe!

Tomorrow is my due date so I’m at the end of my first pregnancy journey and I have to say my 3rd trimester doesn’t hold a candle to my first trimester!!! The nausea and the sore boobs were worse than just about anything else I’ve endured the past 9 months. Well, the uti that wouldn’t go away during my second trimester wasn’t fun, but nausea 24/7 during the holidays? Torture! I feel like by my third trimester I had a better handle on the constant changes and was more able to roll with the punches. I have to say, I’ve definitely been through worse, so don’t be afraid of your third trimester because it isn’t awful for everyone = ) You’ll get the hang of this pregnancy thing and, who knows, you might even grow to enjoy it! Happy gestating!

I miss ALL of the above! It is really hard to pay attention to everything I eat, slather on my body, use to cook with, watch on TV, each emotion I feel is exaggerated by 5,000, etc. I know that it is very important but this is all a bit overwhelming! And the cravings just take my sense overboard…is everyone else going through this too? At times I feel like I am in another body- lol!

Besides my daily cravings (that actually make me feel as if I have voices in my head) – my 2 biggest concerns are ACNE & STRETCH MARKS! I hate to sound vein but I am already getting a small amount of acne and starting to feel itchy on my tummy. My sister swears by The Spoiled Mama Pregnancy skin care line. Anyone heard of it? She says it not only kept her stretch mark free but cleared her acne with the facial line. She didn’t get a single mark and it sounds good but want to see if other have used the tummy butter cream and face wash?

I’m 20 weeks pregnant. I still have caffeine, they say 150mg a day is completely fine. Deli meat is okay, just heat it until steaming. There’s NOTHING like a good toasted turkey havarti sandwich! Yum! Dear god how I miss my sashimi and saki. Okay, I will admit, packing up my old clothes hand realizing something that fit last week will not fit this week. I made a terrible decision of purchasing a pair of side panel maternity jeans when I was really, really bloated at 8 weeks. No one told me that they wouldn’t fit at 20 weeks. The heartburn has been a killer and no amount of zantec of maylox has helped. At least it will all be worth it! There are many more foods that are “okay” to eat than you think. Most cheeses are pasteurized and most meat and some caffeine is just fine. :)

Nicole commented on Jul 15 11 at 12:40 pm

Jessica- I use the Mama Mio products- they’re awesome. My husband got me a kit with a bunch of their pregnancy products. Nothing for acne, but all about stretchmarks, firming, cellulite- all of that fun stuff! Nothing wrong with a little bit of vanity- just because you’re going to be a mom doesn’t me you don’t matter anymore!
Nicole- I have been eating these papaya chews from a health food store for the heartburn. They help and you can eat a ton of them cause they’re natural- or so says my midwife, but of course ask your dr/midwife first!

Taz commented on Jul 15 11 at 4:57 pm

(I’m a Little Things We Do follower, not prego and no kids yet…)

But you can’t have FETA?!? crap…this is looking like less and less fun, this whole being pregnant ordeal…

Gretchen commented on Jul 18 11 at 8:47 pm

I feel for you ladies. But I would have absolutely no complaints if I was pregnant! I’m not currently pregnant, but have been 4 times before. One premature birth (32 weeks) and 3 miscarriages later, I would LOVE to have the symptoms you ladies are having for the wonderful, miraculous reasons that you’re having those symptoms. I’d trade you places in a heartbeat! If I do get pregnant and don’t miscarry again, I will not complain about one single thing during pregnancy. I will relish it all!
