Being Pregnant

Born on the Fourth of July

mynameisliberty Born on the Fourth of JulyStars like Selma Blair, Jewel, Kate Hudson and Victoria Beckham are expecting babies on or near the Fourth of July. First Daughter Malia Obama was born on the Fourth of July. And maybe your little firecracker is due any day now, too. So, what do you name your baby if he makes his arrival on the same day as our country’s birthday?

Our friends at Babyzone came up with ideas for Patriotic Baby Names–with inspiration ranging from historic U.S. cities (Austin, Boston) and the wild, Wild West (Walker, Ryder or simply “West”) to respectable virtues (think Jessica Alba’s little Honor) and popular First Ladies (Abigail and Jacqueline.)

Some names from their list I might consider, if tomorrow was my due date and I was a more spirited patriot:

Presidential: Kennedy, Madison
Geographical: Brooklyn, Charlotte, Savannah
Founding Fathers: Benjamin, Samuel, Paul, Miles
Modern History Makers: Martin, Maya (as in Luther and Angelou)

My friend has a grandmother named “Glo,” short for “Gloria” or “Glory.” I’ve also heard of “Libby” as a shortened version of  “Liberty” and a boy named “Merrick,” whose parents had the word “America” as their inspiration.

I would probably be most likely to consider classics like George, Thomas or Theodore, for boys. I think I’d go with Eleanor or Jacqueline for a little lady. Or, what about a little girl named “July” (June is cute, and popular enough) or a boy named “Julian”?

Would you let a baby born on the Fourth of July influence your naming decision? Do you like the display of patriotism or not?

I plan on naming my daughter Charlotte, not because of the city, but because of a veteran of both World Wars who befriended me as a child. Who’s more patriotic than him? (I happen to have a psycho ex named Charles, so it had to be a girl’s name.)

Usually “theme” names like this turn out disastrous–but I think some of your suggestions are pretty cute!

I agree that theme names can be too much but what a fun idea (if kept in check). We lived in Austin,TX when my first boy was born and I had considered using the city as a middle name but it felt funny at the time. Now that we’ve moved on and I miss that city and great friends there dearly in retrospect it could have been a great way to remember a great place we once called home and was my son’s birth place. Now if your going for America as a name you can just forget it!

My son was born on the 4th of July & we named him Cole Wyatt. It had nothing to do w/the day he was born. It’s just the name we choose when we found out he was a boy.
