This dress will fit me now and post-baby!

Is it just me, or does anyone else really struggle to drop endless amounts of cash on an entire new wardrobe during pregnancy?  There are a few items that are definitely worth the splurge – maternity jeans, smoothing tanks, and bigger bras just to name a few.  But outside of the true essentials, I find it so painful to spend big money on clothing that I know I won’t wear once my bump is gone.

This weekend I needed something nice to wear for a formal dinner with my husband’s office group.  While I was willing to spend a little money to look nice, I was also determined that I could find something that would be able to be worn again.  I set out to the mall with a mission to buy something in my normal pre-pregnancy size (so that it would still fit post-baby), and also in a non-maternity style, knowing that this was either a genius idea or something that would leave me in tears in the dressing room.

The good news is that I left not only with a pretty dress, but also with a revelation that there is one perfect style of dresses that can truly fit all women – those with a bump, and those without…

The Maxi Dress is fashion’s gift to women of all shapes and sizes.  The high stretchy waistline allows the dress to grow along with your body, and the flowing fabric is the perfect material to flatter your bump without making you feel like you are wearing a tent (like so many maternity dresses do).  And hopefully, once the baby arrives and my stomach returns to a relatively normal pre-baby flatness (crossing fingers!), these dresses will still fit and flow over a flatter figure as well.  It’s much easier for me to justify the cost of a few nice pieces for this summer, knowing that I should be able to get plenty of wear out of them for many summers to come.

Here are a few of my favorite maxi dress options that are available in stores now…

You look absolutely gorgeous and glowing Emily!! Love that dress on you. Since Maxi dresses are in right now, I too already bought a couple to wear now and for when we get pregnant (we’re currently trying) since I too thought it’d be the perfect dress for wearing before, during, and after pregnancy. It’s so nice to be able to have clothing like this so that we don’t need to buy all maternity wear :)

I currently rock 3 people’s maternity wardrobes in addition to my own. With my first pregnancy, I had 2 other friends’ things! So I think that saves a lot of money. And I have at least half a dozen dresses to choose from for nicer events! I know it’s tough for you since you just moved but I have even shipped/been shipped maternity clothes. Even if you spend $20 on the shipping, you might squeeze in 20 items! I get compliments on a lot of the clothes and give credit where credit is due … And when I’m done with this pregnancy, I’ll be offering my clothes up again. So far only my sister and SIL have used them but I hope they will get more use elsewhere! Hopefully you can loan yours out if you have friends you trust – and if you want to have more kids, you will wear them again! (Nothing against maxi dresses, of course. You look cute in the pic! They personally aren’t my style, though … and I feel/look ridiculous in most non-maternity stuff at this point!)

I have also discovered the maxi dress recently! I wish I would have found it a long time ago, those first few awkward months would have been so much more stylish!

Show me a maxi dress that doesn’t have a plunging neckline and can support a bra and I might be on board. Alas, without this, if you are well endowed these are not dresses made for all. There isn’t a maxi-dress in the world that has a boob pocket big enough for a DD woman that doesn’t want to show her cleavage. Your strapless/spaghetti strapped examples prove the point. However – you look fabulous and have a body fit for the style. I’m definitely green with envy.

Um, you look REALLY pregnant in that dress – and gorgeous of course! Your bump has definitely grown in the past week! Loving the summer dresses also as a preggo girl!

You look so beautiful in the picture! However, I have to agree with Rebecca, I bought a couple of maxi dresses but I wouldn’t be comfortable wearing them anywhere other than around my own house. I’ve grown from a C to a D and this new bigger cleavage is almost as weird as this new baby bump! Don’t stress too much about spending on a new wardrobe, I’ve bought a handful of tee’s, tanks, skirts, and pants that I wear over and over and over. It was weird at first wearing basically the same 5 or 6 outfits to work every week, but pregnant girls can get away with that. The only downside is I find I’m doing laundry much more often because I don’t have an entire closet full of options!

I love maxi dresses and am stocking up for the summer. I am 5 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I am a size DD when NOT pregnant and just put basic tanks underneath. I can wear a normal bra and it still looks cute! But I HAVE to know where the author’s dress came from? I need it. :)

You look lovely! I wish I could wear maxi dresses, but at only 5′-2″, they don’t work for me. Sigh.

Leah commented on Jun 20 11 at 5:57 pm

With the exception of one top and three belly bands (which were worthless and a total waste of money!), I am proud to say that I have not bought any new maternity clothes. I received a few hand-me-down items from my sister and picked up a few items at a baby and maternity resale shop. I’ve managed to clothe myself for a business-casual office environment for under $100.

My wardrobe is quite limited, but it’s actually rather nice, because I don’t waste time agonizing about what to wear. I’m already thinking about paring down my non-maternity wardrobe now that I’ve experienced the benefits of having less.

Tragically, the short people among us can’t work the maxi dress. Which is tragic, because if I could have, that’s all I would have purchased.

I’m 5’1 and I rock maxi dresses! In fact, I wore one yesterday and got a ton of compliments…it can be done ladies! Just find a good tailor, or a good pair of scissors!

Danielle commented on Jun 20 11 at 6:50 pm

I am scared that my new boobs will look HUGE in a maxi dress. They seem bigger this pregnancy than last!!!
Where is your dress from? I think that I will have to try one on and see how ‘the girls’ look in it before making any purchases.

If only they made maxi dresses with sleeves! Super cute :)

Amber K commented on Jun 20 11 at 8:55 pm

Love love love maxi dresses, during and after baby. I thought the deep v’s were great because it made it easy to whip out a boob for breastfeeding. I almost don’t know what I’ll do with myself when I don’t have to buy clothes based on how easy it is to breastfeed in them ;)

Sarah Myers commented on Jun 21 11 at 12:39 am

Pre-pregnancy I had DD boobs, and I have two Maxi dresses! All you have to do is put a cami underneath and then you don’t have to worry about the plunging necklines! It looks fine and the dresses are totally worth it! Come on ladies lets think a little out the box here!

Amanda commented on Jun 21 11 at 7:12 am

That dress is so cute! I love that on you. I have 2 maxi dresses, but they are maternity. I absolutely love them. The way I’m carrying (all in the belly and out front) means I can’t get away with normal pre-pregnancy clothes at all anymore. In fact, some of my maternity clothes are not long enough anymore and I still have 2 months left! Depending on how you’re carrying the baby, these are fabulous options though. I love the idea of them being not maternity so you can wear them when the baby comes.

Tiffany commented on Jun 21 11 at 10:31 am

One thing that I totally didn’t think of while I was pregnant is that for dresses to be nursing friendly, they need “access” – think buttons down the front, a wrap front, or a stretchy neckline. Especially if you’re nursing for a full year, it’ll be awhile before you get back into those regular dresses! Even when I’m pumping at work, I can’t wear regular dresses. Although it is nice to wear clothes that I didn’t wear while I was pregnant so there’s no mistaking it.
