Because I want her teaching new moms about birth!

Lady Gaga giving birth to a giant puff of gold glitter while wrapped up in black dominatrix gear… when I think of childbirth, that is certainly the mental picture I get!  Or at least the picture I now get in my mind after watching Saturday Night Live this past weekend, which Lady Gaga yet again pushed the envelope of birth with her performance.

With her new album Born This Way hitting shelves all over the world, she seems to be taking on childbirth all over the place. But I am fearful for all the new mothers, and younger women who will be the next generation of birthing women and how these images will impact their view of childbirth in general.

I mean, for most sensible people the images of the pop figure pushing extreme limits with her performances really isn’t going to have a giant impact.  But there will be people who are scared to death and become instantly fearful of birth over something as simple as the SNL performance. Hell it scared the bejesus out of me!

Go ahead!  Watch it yourself and tell me it doesn’t spring some thoughts of childbirth, and how frightening it can be… and if that line of thinking doesn’t pop up, hell the performance itself is just as scary!

But it brings me back to the mainstream media and how we are all taught to view childbirth since we are young women. I know growing up the memories I have are from General Hospital and other prime time dramas which showed birth as this crazy, emergent, and frightening event.  Remember when Laura had Lu Lu on General hospital?  Talk about scary!

How often do you see uncomplicated or peaceful births?  Rarely?  Almost never?  Because they aren’t good for ratings. The lack of drama isn’t going to rope in viewers, and of course we all know where shows that don’t bring in the bacon end up.

I think one of the lessons we need to pass on to our sisters, nieces, friends, and other family members is that these shows shouldn’t be taken as a lesson, but rather a warning of what birth is NOT for most people. If we don’t take the time to help them out, who will… what eventually what will happen to childbirth in general?

But without the influence of positive birth where is the next generation going to be?
