Where Does Your State Rank?
Do you know where you state ranks in terms of maternity care, c-section rates, labor induction, infant death, or cost of care?
Well, if you don’t there is a way you can find out now thanks to the staff at Mapping Health.
The first interactive map of this nature allows you to check the most up to date birth statistics for your state, which are not widely available often. I learned this two years ago, when I started working on a project called Connecticut Worst to First. Our goal was to find statistics by hospital, and the process took over six months for simple statistics like c-section rates, and VBAC numbers. Why? Because in Connecticut, my home state… it is not required by law to report to the public. The process involved the department of health, stubborn state workers, and my own dime because very page of information we were looking for cost money.
This project will not only help women nationally, but it will hopefully help to promote change in states with less than ideal outcomes, and high intervention rates which exceed recommended numbers.
The statistics included for each states interactive map include:
- Rate of c-sections
- Rate of induction
- Rate of infant death
- Rate of premature birth
- Rate of low birth weight
- Teen birth rate per 1,000 births
- Payment of medical malpractice
- Number of Birth Centers
- Rate of Midwife attended births
- Rate of African American births
- Total Births
- Population
It also breaks down care costs as a whole into categories like:
- Daily cost for impatient care
- Hospital based registered nurses per 1,000 residents
- Percent of mothers who begin prenatal care in the first trimester
The lists go on and on, but it really helps to paint a clear picture of the different information available out there for the different states. So if you are wondering where your state ranks in terms of c-section rates, inductions, and birth in general, this map is for you!
