Fish Oil May Prevent Postpartum Depression Symptoms
Would you add fish oil to your daily pregnancy vitamin and supplement routine if you knew it could possibly prevent postpartum depression symptoms?
New research out of the University of Connecticut School of Nursing shows that women who took fish oil supplements during pregnancy had fewer symptoms of postpartum depression than women who took placebo. The study began with the pregnant women starting the study at 24 weeks pregnant and continuing fish oil thru the birth of their child.
In addition to potentially preventing postpartum depression, fish oil potentially helps with lower cholesterol, reducing inflammation and improving brain function.
A recent CDC survey suggests that between 11 and 18 percent of new mothers suffer from symptoms associated with postpartum depression.
As a mom who has twice battled postpartum depression, this is definitely something I will be asking my OBGYN about.

Steph commented on Apr 13 11 at 12:40 amInteresting. During my first pregnancy I asked my OB/GYN if he recommended taking anything other than a prenatal vitamin. He said the only supplement he takes and would recommend anyone take would be fish oil. Unfortunately with this second pregnancy I am both extremely nauseous (still at 30 weeks) and burping a lot – NOT a good combination when taking fish oil!! So I haven’t been able to. Although the organic milk I buy is fortified with fish oil (sounds bad but you can’t taste a thing), so I’m hoping that will cover me.
Katherine @ Postpartum Progress commented on Apr 14 11 at 9:55 amThe study was of only 52 women, which is hardly large enough. And a recent study of more than 2,000 women in Australia found the exact opposite – that DHA doesn’t prevent PPD. So the jury is still out on this.
Brooke commented on Apr 15 11 at 1:04 pmI take it daily anyway, pregnant or not. The non-burp variety works for me Steph! Even with the mega heartburn.
