Pregnancy cravings beat out veganism for actress Natalie Portman

As most pregnant women know, there are cravings that inevitably go hand and hand with being with child. For me they’ve been everything I can’t have, like sushi, Caesar salad and undercooked meat (which is probably still not a good idea even when I’m not pregnant, but still).

For Oscar winner Natalie Portman, it’s everything she was previously not allowed to have on her vegan diet. Which is why she has given up being a vegan.

During an interview on a radio show earlier this morning, Natalie confessed she broke out and cracked the eggs when she became pregnant.

“If you’re not eating eggs, then you can’t have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that’s all you want to eat,” she said, according to Us magazine. “I actually wanted eggs at the beginning and then they grossed me out after awhile.”

Portman adopted a vegan lifestyle in 2009 after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals, but says she doesn’t regret her decision to slide backwards. She’s now following a vegetarian diet during her pregnancy.

It’s hard for me to imagine being vegan at any time, especially during pregnancy, and mostly for the same reasons that Natalie has given it up — chocolate cake is just too inviting for me to say no. I also watched an Oprah episode a few months ago when she and her entire staff went vegan for a week and while I thought the idea was lovely (or something), it seemed to me like it was more work (and money) than I had time (and money) for. I’m sure once you get into it, the process of cooking and shopping is less involved. But I’m pretty happy to be able to eat a brownie or scrambled egg — pregnant or not.

Did being pregnant make you want to eat things you had previously vowed not to?

I had a huge protein aversion for most of my first and second trimester, especially with chicken, which is the protein I mostly eat. I’ve been eating a lot of pepperoni, which I’ve never eaten before in my entire life. I never vowed not to, but it’s odd, nonetheless.

@Christine — So funny —– I had chicken for the first time since I found out I was pregnant on Sunday night. Couldn’t stand to look at until then. I was able to go back to other proteins at the start of my second trimester.

Weirdly, I started really wanting milk during pregnancy, when I’ve hated it my whole life (even as a little kid). Now the baby is 11 weeks and apparently has milk protein allergy. This is my 4th dairy-free day (including chocolate, whey, baked stuff, etc) and its SO HARD!!

@Hollie — I feel for you. Stay strong!

Hollie- It gets easier, we’ve been doing it for nearly 5 years now because of my son’s life-threatening dairy allergy. As a bonus, it helped me lose weight too!
