New Breastfeeding Study Results: Make Me Feel Stabby!

2655516570 6f86d664f0 300x200 New Breastfeeding Study Results: Make Me Feel Stabby!Just with all the positive information coming out about the benefits of breastfeeding, and all the great health benefits it has… a new study comes out showing that the majority of people think breastfeeding mothers are… in so many words stupid.  Wha Wha What?!

A study out of Oxford University last week concluded children who are breastfeed in turn do better in school, but even with this great publication, which many already knew, another study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin reports mothers who breastfeed are widely viewed as less competent than otherwise identical females.

Further driving the breastfeeding biased in our country, sadly. These results were not the finding of one study, but three separate studies. And one of the worst parts of it all… gender doesn’t matter when it comes to this bias.  Men and women feel the same way about mothers who breastfeed.

Why does this make me feel horrible, and slightly pissed off?   Because it is bad enough that mothers have giant hurdles in society to jump over in order to have a successful breastfeeding relationship, but now women are going to have to worry that some jackass is going to be thinking they are a less competent mother, or less educated by making the choice to give their child the best possible start in life?

Sigh!  What is next?  People judging parents who choose organic foods, or skip choices deemed unhealthy by the modern pediatric guidelines today?

Because mothers, especially breastfeeding mothers need to have a harder time in life right?

Heck, I can tell you just from my own experience, and comments in the past couple weeks about breastfeeding, and my must succeed mentality this time around… society, even women of childbearing age are significantly under educated, and misinformed about breastfeeding in general.

Just another nail in the coffin of society. Ugh!

Stabby is right!! Of course you have to consider the psychology of those who don’t breastfeed yet are intelligent enough to know about the benefits. You sort of have to create a negative aura about BF if you want to justify your own choices. Now I’m not saying that ALL women who don’t breastfeed do this but ego defense mechanisms really must be at play to some degree. I wonder how much the authors adjusted for this variable in their study?

Not surprised. The majority of people are ignorant about breastfeeding. Anything that I do that is deemed as “popular”, I question.

Dawn commented on Mar 24 11 at 11:07 am

Jen said it better than I ever could. However, if you look at where I come from, It’s almost always the educated, well-spoken, well-adjusted moms breast feeding. I’m a little surprised by the studies re: public opinion.

Oh for pete’s sake. Breast feed, and people will judge you for being stupid. Don’t breast feed, and people will judge you for “feeding your child chemicals” (regardless of why you chose or were not able to breastfeed).

It doesn’t matter what you do. Epidural or natural, cloth or disposable, schedule or on-demand, cry it out or co-sleep . . . people are going to form opinions about you. You can’t control it, you can’t make it stop . . . but you CAN control how it does or does not affect you.

In other words, get over it. Yep, it sucks (ha, so to speak). Get over it anyway.

See, I just did it too.

Formula feeders always complain (at least around here) about how there is soooo much pressure to breastfeed (as if it is a bad thing…) but then we see studies like this. My conclusion: if you don’t want to be judged, don’t have a baby. But this surprises me because breast is clearly better for baby, and because of the demographics of breastfeeders and formula feeders.

Bonnie commented on Mar 24 11 at 11:22 am

You’ll get judged big time for not having a baby though, Bonnie.

Stupid study. Slap in the face.

I am really lucky to work in an environment where the overall office is encouraging and supportive of its breastfeeding mothers. But then I can turn around and have people in my family, some of which who work in the medical field, brush off breastfeeding as silly. I know, I know… weird and strange… but hey, that’s family. But I think JEN hit the nail on the head. There is a defensiveness that makes people degrade something they either couldn’t do, or don’t know much about. It is much easier to ridicule then admit fault. So I don’t think education has much to do with it. Just whether or not a person is self aware and secure with themselves. And unfortunately, not many people are.

I think I would need to see the data and their polling methods. I would venture to say that if I polled my friends, most would agree that breastfeeding mothers are as competent, if not more so and furthermore, that they are intelligent. This is bunk and it seems the three separate studies were conducted by the same people. Makes it less credible to me.

My oh My, goes to shoe you, you just can’t win. When I had my son and breast fed him until he weened himself (11mo), I would always get a “congratulations, keep up the good work” from both my OBGYN and the pediatricians, so much positive reinforcement… WHY? I have always found it a little funny! Well while I was oblivious to other peoples views I can see why Drs may need to give other mothers an Atta Girl, or WAY TO GO, Great job, after reading this!! Isn’t it what those Boobs were made to do?? I can’t understand how people are so judgmental and put off by NATURAL!!

Mandi commented on Mar 25 11 at 5:08 pm

If anything…mother’s who choose to breastfeed are MORE educated…knowing about all of the research that’s out there that PROVES that breastfeeding is the most beneficial thing that you can do for your baby…even if it means a years worth of sleepless nights! In my opinion…formula is the easy way out…

Kerry commented on Mar 25 11 at 5:32 pm

I try not to judge a woman if she BF or formula feeds. I do not know her situation. She may have tried and not been able to and I leave it as that. this article is crazy!!! Mom’s who breast feed are just as educated as ones that formula feed. just like ones who use cloth over disposables are not any more educated.

Danielle you are right that so many women do not know about breast feeding at all. I have learned so much from you and the tribe about what can happen to those whom have the best intentions.

GRRRRRRRRRRR

“Isn’t it what those Boobs were made to do??” EXACTLY! Stabby doesn’t even begin to describe it. I have a bachelor’s degree, so they can screw off, quite frankly. If someone thinks I’m stupid, let’s go compete on Jeopardy. I’ll kick their ass. ;)

Suebee commented on Mar 26 11 at 11:03 am

It’s a good thing I really don’t care what other people think of me LOL
Those who think that nursing mothers are less competent etc are just ill informed, or people who were probably paid by the formula companies to say what they did in the study cause the formula companies are nervous about the Surgeon General’s Call to Action: Breastfeed! and the numerous studies that are showing the uncountable ways that breastfeeding is better for human babies.
I’d be nervous too if I were them, the truth always comes out and will prevail over money making any day.

Summer commented on Mar 26 11 at 11:55 pm

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Neither choice is better or worse. Get over it.

Uma Alto commented on Oct 04 11 at 2:31 pm

I agree with nursing; I did it for 11 months for two amazing boys. And your article is infuriating. Mothers breast-feed for love, duty, and life. However, to help the cause of beast-feeding moms, please use “spell-check”. Writing about ignorant mothers and having bad grammar pretty much takes away your point. Much love, mom in tx
