birthmatters sized 207x300 Ina Mae Gaskin Book Signing in Brooklyn This SundayIf you considered a natural birth or even flirted with the idea of a midwife, you likely know who Ina Mae Gaskin is. For the unaware: Gaskin helped found the natural childbirth movement in the 1970s at the Farm Midwifery Center in Summertown, Tennessee, and her center is famous for its low rates of interventions, morbidity and mortality. She has written several influential books on the topic (Spiritual Midwifery and Ina Mae’s Guide to Childbook).

Gaskin has a new book, Birth Matters (Seven Stories Press), and will be appearing for free at the Warsaw in Greenpoint on Sunday, March 6, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. During the event, Gaskin will talk about the new book and sign books (up to two per person, purchased at the event). The event is sponsored by the independent bookstore in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, WORD. More than 200 people have RSVP’d on the event’s Facebook page, so best get in line early.

If you want to mix and mingle with like-minded natural birth proponents, head to the new Caribou Baby from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for refreshments and snacks.
