Being Pregnant
The American Uterus: Hostile Environment
Before I get started, I want to say that this post is going to have a couple words in it that may make some people feel uncomfortable. Those words are uterus, and vagina. Simple health terms often replaced by silly slang terms like Vajayjay or whoha. But to get the real impact of my thoughts and feelings, I think the anatomically correct terms will make the most impact.
I am sad to be a pregnant women in the United States right now, I am even downright scared. It seems like the uterus is no longer a safe or personal organ. It is becoming the center of attention for mostly male politicians, and the kinda scares me.
And I am not here to preach politics, or tout my liberal background or opinion, just to get people to stop for a moment and say no matter what your political background is, we should stop and see how many steps backwards we are taking with all the new proposed laws, and funding cuts we are seeing.
First starting with the post I read earlier today by Ceridwen right here on Being Pregnant. Georgia lawmakers proposing investigations into women who miscarry. I am not sure the genius that came up with this idea, but it certainly isn’t a good one. It is just another way to be intrusive into the medical care of women, as well as victimize those who have just gone through a very hard, and emotional time. A friend of mine recently miscarried, and what I have seen her go through I would not wish on anyone. These lawmakers would essentially be causing trauma, and not being held accountable for their actions.
Note to lawmakers in Georgia, the medical records and care of women isn’t your business. Buttttt out!
Then there is the never ending saga in the House of Representatives over Planned Parenthood funding which would leave hundreds of thousands of women without low cost and affordable medical care. Another bright idea. Like Planned Parenthood or not, they provide lifesaving services yearly. Planned Parenthood saved my life!
Personhood USA is trying to give your fetus/baby/pregnancy/or whatever you would like to call your pregnancy or child more rights than you… Yes. Exactly how it sounds. But this one overall gets my blood boiling because these personhood laws are being used for more than just abortion rights, these are being used to force women into things like c-sections, and other medical procedures they could otherwise deny without an issue during pregnancy. Don’t like that gestational diabetes screening at 28 weeks? They will be able to force you to have it! Don’t want that early induction because your OB has 9 holes of golf to play? Suck it up because you will be getting it whether you want to or not!
All stories of real women who have had their Constitutional rights violated because a medical provider, or judge disagreed with their right for informed consent.
Something like that makes me want to have my uterus removed completely!
But sadly, the rights that women have fought for over the past century are slowly being taken away. From reproductive rights, to simple everyday things, which include miscarriage of all stuff.
Your uterus slowly is becoming public property for political gain, and this is a super scary time to be pregnant, or even consider becoming pregnant.

Amanda commented on Feb 21 11 at 10:42 pmI think it’s time to have my uterus removed. Considering we are planning if we ever have another child to go unassisted.
JJN commented on Feb 21 11 at 11:14 pmThis video is a perfect example of why we need to advocate Natural Childbirth in it’s purest form. I would bet there are lots of woman who have been abused by this good old boys club system!!!
Scott Evans commented on Feb 21 11 at 11:26 pmAnd over 50 million (50,000,000) preborn little boys and girls have been abused by the good old Planned Parenthood system. Hey, ladies, try this one on for size. If you don’t want to be pregnant, don’t perform the activity that could make it so. DUH!!!
Danielle625 commented on Feb 21 11 at 11:29 pm@Scott – This is not about abortion, which makes up 3% of the services Planned Parenthood provides annually. This is about life saving funding for cancer screening, birth control that is affordable (which without this, would increase the number of unplanned pregnancies, and abortions) and about women being able to have their right of informed consent.
This is not an abortion debate.
Lindsay commented on Feb 22 11 at 8:49 am@Scott- the same applies to your gender. If you don’t want to be a father, don’t have sex. And ditto what Danielle625 said: this is not an abortion debate.
Why am I surprised that you even said that, Scott? Once again, men can do what they want, but women are treated like second class citizens.
It’s disgusting and wrong and evil.
Megan commented on Feb 22 11 at 9:41 am@Scott, I love how you just assume that every woman who is having an abortion chose to have sex. Also, between cutting the funding to PP and abstinence only training, we are going to have a slew of teenage pregnancies on our hands. That costs all of us even more money, if you think about it.
Danielle, I am right there with you. I had a great OBGYN and now I am with a great birthing center, but I hear the stories and I’ve had my share of bad doctors. It’s ridiculous the excuses my friends have made for their doctors and it breaks my heart that birth is turning into such a political issue. Birth is one of the purest things we can do and it doesn’t need to be muddled up with business or politics. I have to agree with Lindsay’s take on women being treated like second class citizens. I don’t see (and never have seen) men having to fight for the rights to their bodies.
Danielle625 commented on Feb 22 11 at 9:44 am@Megan – There are good and bad providers out there. They are everywhere. I had a crappy OB with my first son, and the OB that ended up delivering my second son after I was unable to birth on my own was great.
I also wrote a long piece on a crappy Certified Nurse Midwife on Sunday. There are good and bad in every profession, but trying to make laws that will impact women on this level is nothing short of irresponsible, and a step backwards for women everywhere.
Ireene commented on Feb 22 11 at 3:31 pmI agree with Scott, though he could have said it a little nicer. I’m a midwife using, baby wearing, breastfeeding mom. Planned Parenthood is not going to be shut down just because they don’t get anymore of my tax dollars. (though I wish they would). Also most of the services that Planned Parenthood offers can be found at a “life center.” Beside the new health care law will allow force insurance companies to take women and provide them with health services. Personhood USA doesn’t seek to force women to do anything except treat the baby like they are a person. As far as the baby having “more rights” moms put their babies before themselves everyday. ie. late night feedings, child rearing, pregnancy in general demands unselfishness. As moms we cheer each other on everytime a mom twitters, blogs or post a FB status about her lack of sleep. So I really don’t see what the problem is when Personhood USA simply wants to point out the fact that a person comes alive once in their life and it’s before they exit the their mommy’s body. Why shouldn’t they have the “right” to have a chance to live? Finally before someone rails at me saying that I don’t know what I’m talking about… my family has been forever affected by abortion. My Father aches every March over the son’s birthday he would have been celebrating had he not helped his girlfriend make the “choice” to have an abortion. I would have an older brother if it weren’t for abortion. We miss him, and his name is Nathan.
Danielle625 commented on Feb 22 11 at 3:38 pm@Ireene – I am not exactly sure what a “life center” is but I have never heard of one.
The point is, without the federal funding, hundreds of thousands of women will lose access to vital services. 1 out of every 5 women in America have gotten some form of health care (excluding abortion services) from Planned Parenthood in their lifetime.
Ireene commented on Feb 22 11 at 3:55 pm@Danielle625 1 of every 4 women gets abortions these days. Those women I have met and many of them are my friends. 1 out of every 5 women receiving help from PP? I have yet to meet them. Life centers are prolife clinics that offer a wide variety of services some include all of the following, or are able to offer only some of the following based on their funding and volunteers… pap smears, pregnancy testing, sonograms, counseling for pregnant women and post abortive women, free baby clothes, some host baby showers, they are connected to trust worthy adoption services. They are strictly nonprofit, they don’t get any government funding and they equally value the mom, her privacy and her baby.
Danielle625 commented on Feb 22 11 at 4:00 pm@Ireene – I have met women who have had abortions also, I have family members who have also been in that boat. I also know many women in real life that have used Planned Parenthood for health services. The numbers are not ones I have made up, they were from the news.
As for the “life centers” we have nothing like that in our area. We have crisis pregnancy centers, or planned parenthood. Our crisis pregnancy centers do nothing but council and make offers to mothers they cannot live up to. I had it happen to a close friend… they promised her diapers, clothes, car seats, cribs, and the moon. They gave her a shopping bag with 10 diapers and wished her luck once her baby was born. These centers certainly are not all over the country by any means.
As a mother of two, almost three, no abortions, and someone who used planned parenthood, I have nothing but the best to say about them. They never forced me into anything, or counciled me to do anything but what I wanted to do.Fortunately, it looks like the Republican’s wont get very far with this because of the amount of problems it will create, and the amount of lives it will cost. Our maternal mortality rate is high enough, and this will only cost more lives, along side their proposed cuts for medicaid and WIC.
Bunnytwenty commented on Feb 22 11 at 4:36 pm“They are strictly nonprofit, they don’t get any government funding and they equally value the mom, her privacy and her baby.”
Every word of this is a lie. They give you a pregnancy test and try to guilt you into keeping the baby or giving it up for adoption (which is a pretty lucrative business, by the way), and yes, they get government funding.
Ireene commented on Feb 22 11 at 4:54 pm@Danielle I’m sorry that happened to your friend. It makes me sick when people do that. If you can’t make good on a promise to someone, especially a new mom you should keep your mouth shut!
@Bunnytwenty Not lying. I don’t work for a life center, I have friends that do. They had abortions, they care about the women that they’re talking to. The centers I know of do not receive government funding. Plain and simple.
Danielle625 commented on Feb 22 11 at 5:04 pm@Ireene – Who funds these centers for the costly services they provide?
Ireene commented on Feb 22 11 at 5:17 pmPrivate donors. It all comes from people who want to help women and babies.
Danielle625 commented on Feb 22 11 at 5:22 pm@Ireene – How many women is this center seeing on private donations? It doesn’t seem like they could be helping very many on private donations alone, especially in the current economy.
Ireene commented on Feb 22 11 at 7:01 pmDanielle I wish I had the numbers for you.
Katy E commented on Feb 22 11 at 11:08 pmMy first thought when I heard about the proposed cuts to planned parenthood was “Great, now we can ensure that more poor and under-served women can die premature deaths due to lack of cervical and breast cancer screenings.” It’s absolutely not an abortion debate. Denying these women necessary medical care simply because they are poor or have fewer resources is very, very wrong. These “Hope”/”Life” resource centers in our area most certainly do not offer life saving pap smears and mammograms. The only medical testing these “Life” centers offer are a free pregnancy test and an ultrasound picture of the fetus they’re hoping to guilt you into keeping/giving up for adoption. They do not offer help or hope to women who are repeatedly raped by their abusive husbands. They do not offer annual screening for cervical cancer and std’s. They do not offer mammograms to the woman who has worked all her life in the office that can no longer buy into employee-sponsored health plans because she ha to keep the lights on and the rent paid. Planned parenthood does.
Mary C commented on Oct 27 11 at 8:23 pmIt is ironic and hypocritical that the Jesus-hating terrorist Scott Melvin Evans would comment.
I know from personal experience.
I live two blocks away from where Scott bullies people nearly every Saturday (Scott Evans calls his bullying and harassing behavior “sidewalk counseling”). We all know exactly who Scott is and every single time I drive by there (like this past Saturday morning), he is out there with a ridiculous looking small video camera mounted to his shoulder, makes terrible loud noises blowing on some horn, all in some vain attempt to overcome some major insecurities, and all while trying to videotape everyone and violating everyone’s right to privacy. My neighbors and I have researched these people and almost all of them are criminals!
Scott Melvin Evans and convicted criminals Jo Anne Scott (convicted of federal charges of conspiring to bomb a clinic!) and Ken Tyler Scott (convicted deadbeat dad!), are all Jesus-hating “sidewalk counselors” and have disgusting, photo-shopped signs, bloody plastic children’s baby dolls, morbid “baby caskets”, and fake ‘abortion’ posters of bloody babies, and these are all over the streets in our neighborhood. They have giant signs of miscarriages and knowingly falsely present them as “abortions”.
I recently found out that Ken Scott has been committed to a mental hospital before because of his actions! Before I found this out, Ken had invited me out to join them after my neighbor’s church went out for the 40 days for life protest. I was appalled at what I witnessed out on the public street! Their tactics are awful and even anti-human.
I have two daughters, both on birth control until they are ready to have my grandchildren (hopefully soon!), and if Scott harassed them like that, I would call the police on him. I met several of the other horrible bullies next to the driveway on that Saturday and got their names: Beau Ballentine, Leslie Hanks, Tony Massey, and Cliff Powell. They are out there regularly and are yelling nasty stuff too. They all try to emulate Scott Evans or Ken Scott’s aggressive, obnoxious, anti-Jesus behaviour.
They know no boundaries, are very loud, obnoxious and aggressive and I can often hear them yelling and making noise from my back yard! NONE of my neighbors want to drive near these horrible images and activities, especially when we have our young children in the car. Everyone reading this take a minute and imagine how you would feel if you had these grotesque signs lining the streets in your neighborhood! We are sick of it. These “protestors” all seem to try to video tape and intimidate anyone who drives down Pontiac street here in Denver and will lie to and mislead ANYONE who they can get to stop to listen, or otherwise is within earshot.
These “sidewalk counselors” are out there nearly every day, and apparently paid to be there by Bob Adolph Enyart of Denver Bible Church in Arvada.
Fact: “Pastor” Bob Adolph Enyart was sentenced to 60 days in jail for beating a 7 year old boy so hard with a belt that he bled! This is the kind of person he truly is the leader of the pack and Scott Evans and Ken Scott follow his every whim, doing the devil’s work.
They are all blasphemous towards the sacred Christian Bible and are harassing many REAL Christians, most whom are going into a clinic for birth control and other needed medical services (many from our surrounding neighborhood!). They do so much harm to the anti-abortion cause, which should be peaceful. I personally would like to see us get to the point where abortion is rare or non-existent.
GOD will be the judge of all of us one way or another, NOT these terrible bullies! Jesus was peaceful and would have never done any of this and would not have approved in any way. These “sidewalk counselors” are the new Westboro Baptist Church of our community and their arrogant ignorance is so sad and pathetic that it sickens me.
These are the worst of the worst of anti-abortion (and anti-gay) extremists. Anyone that associates with these people will be judged the same way by the public and by God (as mentally ill, sadistic and psychopathic!) There is a special place in Hell for all of these people, but it’s just as well, since these “sidewalk counselors” hate Jesus and are doing the devil’s work.
I am a member of a very large and REAL Christian Church south of Denver and our Pastor gave a wonderful sermon on Sunday about how these “sidewalk counselor” bullies blaspheme the name of the Lord. Our Pastor encouraged us to engage Voice of Choice (http://www.vochoice.org) to help attempt to get the protesters to see that this should not be about anyone’s stance on abortion, but to NOT BULLY and NOT HARRASS your fellow human beings.
Hundreds of the parishioners have contacted Voice of Choice and offered their services to do what they could do to help. I hope you will do the same. Please pray for the protesters!
