Miranda Kerr: Supermodel, Champion of Public Breastfeeding

mirandakerrbf 225x300 Miranda Kerr: Supermodel, Champion of Public BreastfeedingNew mom Miranda Kerr gets my vote for celebrity poster girl for Natural Motherhood…at least until Alicia Silverstone has her baby. First, an unmedicated birth of a 10 pound baby. Now, a photo of her breastfeeding in People Magazine. The photo of Kerr, taken by her husband, Orlando Bloom, was posted last week on her website Kora Organics (Where Kerr sells her own line of natural skincare products.)

Though the image did apparently raise some eyebrows and spark some controversy,  there was less brouhaha than you might expect. After all, I can’t recall ever seeing a fully exposed breastfeeding breast in People magazine before. Can you?

Here’s my theory. Maybe people were more able to handle the exposure of Miranda Kerr’s breasts than just any old breastfeeding breasts…simply because Miranda Kerr and her boobs are so darn CUTE.

Yes, that breast has a baby on the end of it which is a somewhat unexpected accessory when you’re more used to seeing it adorned with a Victoria’s Secret bra. But it’s not like its some big ol’ floppy flappy breast spilling into an amorphous blob on the bed.  Maybe seeing those perfect champagne glass orbs in baby feeding mode is somehow less threatening than everyday mortal breasts. Or maybe they just think she looks kind of pretty. I mean, look at her. How could you not?

I do understand the modesty factor when it comes to public breastfeeding, though it’s not something I subscribe to personally. But I do wonder sometimes if part of people’s problem with breastfeeding is that it simply grosses them out. Which happens partly because they’re not used to seeing it. Will a photo of an impossibly gorgeous lingerie model tastefully nursing her newborn help get people more comfortable with the reality of mothers nursing their babies? Maybe not. But it probably won’t hurt.

I think the release of that photo on the Kora website had more to do with trying to sell her skin care line than it had to do with breastfeeding. It paid off big for her though, it got a mention for Kora in People Magazine. Is Miranda pimping her new baby to create interest in her business? Sure looks that way.

I don’t think it was a publicity stunt for her business, although I’m sure it didn’t hurt it one bit! Look at the woman, she’s stunning!

If that were the case, don’t you think it would have been a well lit, professional positioned (instead of one hand/wrist twisted at a funny angle), and possibly air brushed mag spread?

It’s a beautiful, honest picture that brings back memories of breastfeeding my daughter the same way.

Great you posted this photo, Miranda. Breastfeeding has been seen so negatively in our country—people just need to see these type of pictures more often. After all, the #1 reason breasts are on females is to provide a unique ‘custom blend’ milk for infants and young children. Yes, breasts are still beautiful with a baby nursing, and if we are ever going to build a world of healthy people, it has to start here!! There are so many benefits to the mother and baby that we seriously need further support to ensure breastfeeding is heavily promoted. Let’s start with a minimum of 6 months maternity leave. So many mothers want to nurse their infants longer, but the stressors of work, finding excellent childcare, and infant illness (from childcare centers) is a quick way to decrease or lose your milk supply. Babies need to be near their mothers and mothers need to be supported to ensure an adequate mlk supply for exclusive nursing. Each nation sends a clear message in the ways in which they support new mothers, infants and their physical and emotional health during those early years. Our nations are only as strong as our families. I view it as sowing the ‘seeds’ of strength for our future nations.
