Animal Study: Low Doses of BPA Have Impact on Fetal Ovaries
A new study shows that lows doses of bisphenol A (BPA), when given to pregnant mice, have an almost immediate disruptive impact on developing fetal ovaries. BPA is an hormone-mimicking chemical that has been associated with reproductive health issues. In this study, even small amounts of BPA were able to alter the gene expression in fetal mouse ovaries.
The mice in this study were given doses of BPA thought to be equivalent to levels humans are typically exposed to. This study adds to a growing body of research connecting BPA with reproductive organ development. Science Daily reports:
“The research, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Patricia A. Hunt at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, showed that BPA exposure affects the earliest stages of egg production in the ovaries of the developing mouse fetuses, thus suggesting that the next generation (the grandchildren of the females given BPA) may suffer genetic defects in such biological processes as mitosis and DNA replication.”
Momentum to change laws regarding the use of BPA has been growing. Recently (finally!!!) New York Sate has joined others flat out banning BPA in baby bottles and other baby products. But more needs to happen. Anti-BPA legislation is pending in a number of states.
