A Painful Goodbye: Giving Up Diet Coke While Nursing
I have a confession to make.
I drank a little Diet Coke during my pregnancy (a can per day starting in my second trimester), and have continued to consume a small amount since having my baby. I know, I know. Worst thing ever, right?
Everything that I have read says that a small amount of caffeine each day will not hurt my baby while breastfeeding, however, her colic combined with a new study regarding the effects of caffeine on breastfed babies have forced me to make a drastic decision.
I am giving up Diet Coke — totally.
I am not sure when my affair with Diet Coke started, but drinking Diet Coke is the closest thing to a vice or addiction I have. I am not a big coffee drinker, though I’ve tried to pick up that habit. I am fully aware that it isn’t only the caffeine in Diet Coke that is questionably safe for my baby, but also its artificial sweetener — aspartame.
So, it’s been a week since I had even a taste of Diet Coke, however, I’ve found a suitable replacement. I am now drinking caffeine free Diet Coke, because I still crave the taste of cold cola. Ideally, I hope to kick even the caffeine free Diet Coke out of my life, but for now, it’s baby steps.
I don’t know if Kara’s colic has been linked worsened by my occasional Diet Coke, but a wave of guilt washed over me recently and I just had to put my food down on this addiction.
Did you give up caffeine completely while pregnant and nursing? Was it a challenge, if so?

Erin commented on Feb 25 12 at 10:36 pmI drank caffeine all through both pregnancies and while nursing my daughter, plan to still have it with this one too whenever he decides to come out. It was never an issue with my daughter at all – she was a fussy newborn but not colicky, thankfully.
Amanda commented on Feb 26 12 at 10:38 amI will drink Diet Coke made with Splenda so that my baby does not get the aspartame while I am nursing. I hate the caffeine part but sometimes I need a little to help me out since I as well do not like to drink coffee.
Kayla commented on Feb 26 12 at 10:41 amI drank coffee and soda when i was pregnant with my son (he’s almost 4 years old) and he has ADHD. i dont know if that has to do with all the caffeine i drank with him or not. i was 15 when i got pregnant and didnt know any better. with my daughter i cut out ALL caffeine and she’s fine so far. (she’s almost 6 months old) but even with all the caffeine my son was never colicky. so it might have been the caffeine or it might not.

Jessica commented on Feb 26 12 at 11:01 amI gave up caffeine through my pregnancy and haven’t had any since. I use to drink 1 cup of coffee a day. It was a little hard at first. I had a few withdrawl headaches, but I just kept drinking water and after about a week I felt much better. I actually felt more energized and healthier, just by drinking the recommended amount of water per day (8-10 glasses). After my daughter was born we found out she was allergic to dairy and soy so I’ve had to cut those completely out of my diet. It’s been a struggle. Dairy wasn’t to hard but soy has been a challenge. (It’s hidden in everything) I do have a lot of cravings (ice cream, pizza, etc.) but I’ve been able to find some good alternatives. It’s hard but she’s definitely worth all the work.

Halfway through the second trimester I started allowing myself one small regular a week. Then a half-caf a few days a week …
After she was born I went cold turkey again but by 9 months I was back to a large half-caf 5 days a week. I went to strictly only decaf at 9 months and stayed off so far 2.5 months later.
But I use real sugar and it’s coffee – not frappucino or pumpkin spice or some other god-knows-what’s-in-it beverage.
Tori commented on Feb 26 12 at 11:25 amDuet coke has aspartame in it which has been known to cause birth defects and is not recommended during pregnancy. There are only 37gms of caffeine in a coke a cup of Starbucks coffee has 126. The diet coke should have been given up for the danger of aspartame not caffeine.
JJ commented on Feb 26 12 at 11:55 amI wasn’t a big caffeine drinker before my children so I didn’t suffer having to get it up.
However, I did have to remove all dairy and soy from my diet for two of my children due to their intolerance issues. This meant no milk, no chocolate, no cheese (and I LOVE cheese), it also meant almost no junk food of any kind, etc. etc. You would never believe all the places that dairy and soy products show up.
At times, I thought I would never survive. But I did. Between the two kids, I was on the “diet” for 6 years. You learn, you adapt and you do it because you love your child.

Sarah commented on Feb 26 12 at 1:45 pmI allowed myself one coke a day while pregnant, though I tried to avoid it if I could. I had given up caffiene altogether once my son was born, but now that I’m back at work, I’m drinking a couple of cups of half-caff coffee in the mornings. I’m still nursing, but there is no noticeable reaction from my son at all.

Katie commented on Feb 27 12 at 8:28 amOk, I just read that link you included and it says that 3 cups of a coffee a day are fine! A diet coke has less than half the caffeine in a cup of coffee, so I sincerely doubt a one coke a day habit (or more) is having any effect on your baby. I drank soda in moderation during my pregnancy without any guilt and continue to drink coffee daily (my baby is now 9 months) while EBF and I have an occasional soda as well. I think us breastfeeding mothers have enough on our plates without giving up everything under the sun that might be causing our babies to be irritable when, in fact, the irritability disappears magically around the 4 month mark with or without any dietary modifications. And I say this as the mother of two dairy intolerant babies who saw not just irritability, but much more dramatic evidence (that I will not describe in detail) of an actual dietary issue.
100200 commented on Feb 27 12 at 4:42 pmI took up seltzer drinking when I got pregnant. There’s no substitute for a cold coke, but seltzer is amazingly refreshing and completely guilt free. And you still get that satisfying hissss when you crack open a new can. I’ll be honest, Aspertame freaks me out a little.
H.T. commented on Mar 05 12 at 9:19 pmI drank 1 diet coke per day while pregnant. Some days 2, but very rarely. Then when the baby was a newborn I had almost no caffeine (hormones did the trick, plus I napped when I could, and didn’t want caffeine to interfere with my ability to sleep when I needed it). I gradually added diet coke back into my life when I started back at work, but was careful not to also have coffee. Welp, the baby is almost 8 months old, still nursing, and I drink…um, more diet coke than I want to admit. As much as before I got pregnant.
He seems fine. Not irritable, is a great sleeper. I worry about the chemicals, but…you know, he’s never had formula, never had commercially prepared/processed food. If he’s getting some diet coke chemicals passed throuhg the breast milk it is a miniscule amount and it’s making it possible for me to function
