The Maternal Reset Button

Ever just feel like you're losing?

I just woke up from a very hefty three-hour nap. In fact I probably still have pillow creases in the side of my head. The last thing I remember was standing in front of the fridge staring at the door when my husband jolted me out of my stupor and demanded “YOU. Go to bed.”

Bless him, because that’s exactly what I did.

I am a mom with a good life, a supportive family, great friends, healthy children, a warm house, a dependable husband, a well managed case of clinical depression and two really nifty cats … and yet there are still moments when I get overwhelmed.

And that’s okay.

There is no one giant event that led me to staring at the fridge this evening, but rather a combination of little struggles combined with the weather and an overwhelming feeling of GO! GO! GO! that has left me depleted in all my important parts. I don’t like to complain a whole lot, but earlier I sent out a smoke signal on twitter.

Twitter Mentions The Maternal Reset ButtonPlenty of women admitted to double fisting Oatmeal Cream Pies and dipping spoons into the jar of peanut butter. Does this mean we’re all hopeless emotional eaters that are going to end up on some reality show because we can’t manage our own issues? Nope. It means that we are not alone and sometimes to lift the weight we need to hear that we are not alone from someone we trust.

It’s one thing to hear a report about a celebrity dealing with the struggles of motherhood when she has the means to throw money at her struggles in various capacities. It’s another thing to hear from moms just like you who have favorite pairs of stretchy pants (and I dare say some moms will admit to having a “fancy” pair of stretchy pants) whose only contact with the outside world on some days is through their computer as they wage war on lice, laundry and life within their four walls. (Yes, lice. ZOMG LICE.)

Take care of yourself. Take care of those around you and never be ashamed to ask for help, we all get overwhelmed sometimes.

Perfect timing for this post. My “overwhelmed-ness” came to head this weekend when I called my mom a couple days in a row just bawling about “just having a bad day!”. My husband and I both work full-time outside the home in a city without close friends or family nearby. We’re still enduring newly-wed growing pains ourselves and I’m exclusively nursing/pumping for a 5-month old who consistently wakes up once or twice a night to eat. It’s so tough to find “me” time and then it’s even tougher to decide what to do when I get it. I could always use the sleep, but then I miss an opportunity for a therapeutic run outside. Most days I can manage, but sometimes, it’s just overwhelming. And that’s when I call my mommy!
