The One About My Birthing Hips

cover girl BW 7490 300x200 The One About My Birthing HipsLadies, my day came today. The day I was able to get my favorite pre-pregnancy jeans around my hips and buttoned up comfortably.

(If you heard a giant hurrah around 11 am EST? That was me. I missed these jeans. Perfect color, perfect fit, perfect length. OH HOW I WAITED FOR THIS DAY.)

I never gained weight with my first pregnancy, in fact by the end I had lost weight (long story short, I had severe hyperemesis) so I was wearing regular pants to the delivery room. I knew I was in a very tiny minority so when I actually gained a few pounds this last time I knew I wouldn’t be jumping right back into my regular pants after I delivered. But what no one told me is that my hips would spread like cold butter on a warm pancake.

I saw a picture of myself from behind two months ago and I didn’t hate it so I figured I must be doing something right. Nine months up, nine months down. That’s what I kept telling myself. I heard it once years ago and kept telling myself it takes nine months to grow a human so it has to take at least nine months to recover. Seemed perfectly logical. So I didn’t really worry about my weight, I figured if nine months came and went and my pants were still only making it halfway up my thighs? I’d kick it into overdrive. That being said, I did go on a postpartum shopping trip at 4 months and stocked up on some trusty stretchy black pants (kiss kiss Lululemon xoxo, me) and a pair of jeans that fit (kiss kiss Old Navy Skinny Minny Flare xoxo, me) I figured I wouldn’t try on my pre-pregnancy pants again until that nine month mark, only two weeks ago as I ran upstairs, my pants fell down.

Never have I been happier to have my pants fall down.

My middle is still pretty squashy, but I love my squashy parts, they brought me my babies and they are their favorite places to rest their heads.

As of today I’ve been able to add four pairs of pants into my wardrobe and two dresses. Yay!

However my boobs, MY BOOBS ARE STILL HERE.

All 34F of them.

Seriously.

Ah well, my husband thinks it’s AMAZING and they balance out my birthing hips quite well.

How has your postpartum body been behaving?

Congrats on fitting back into your pants and thank you for writing this! I am 3 and a half months postpartum and nothing fits! I keep telling myself the same as you (that it takes the same time as growing the baby to recover) but in the back of my mind I really doubted it. I had been wearing my maternity stuff but now it’s all far too big. I guess I need to go shopping because I need something to wear when I go back to work in two weeks :(. What kind of clothes would you recommend for a transitioning body? I want to buy as few pieces as possible.

I am weird… I was actually 14lbs lighter a week after baby was born than I was the day I took the pregnancy test. No dieting (don’t worry, I’m not loopy!) – I think it was just that I went completely off meat, quit diet coke and became obsessed with tomatoes! Unfortunately, the “I’m breastfeeding” diet kicked in and I’ve put that back on!

@rachel g, you’re where i was six weeks ago, about to go back to work and still not fitting into most of my clothes. i’ve lost weight since my son was born, but not enough to actually get back into the majority of my pre-baby work wardrobe. as my back-to-work date was approaching fast and nothing was fitting, i bit the bullet and did some shopping to tide me over until i (hopefully) fit back into some more of my clothes. i bought: slim fit trousers in black, brown and grey, black knit leggings, and three long-sleeve nursing-friendly tops with empire waists and flowing bodices. it sucks to buy pants as they are expensive, but you need at least one or two pairs that will get you through various tops. don’t make the mistake of buying super loose clothes, as they will make you look bigger – get properly sized clothes that fit you and you will look and feel so much better. good luck!

Ladies, I am 20 years postpartum. Yes, 20 years! And nothing fits! All kidding aside though, congrats for getting back into your jeans, Casey. As for the rest of you moms, try to keep in mind that your body just performed a miracle. Give it time! Meanwhile, enjoy the feelings of awe and wonderment at what your body can do!

After my first born (she is now 2) it took until 7 months and rigorous exercise to get back into anything pre-pregnacy related. The clothes weren’t totally comfortable, but at least they were on!! At 2 months postpartum I bought size 34 jeans and an xl belt and felt humiliated but still tried to reassure myself that it took 9 months to gain, it would take 9 months to lose. When my second was born in late September this year, I put that same belt on at 2.5 weeks postpartum and cinched it up at 2 notches smaller than when I had started wearing it after the last birth (at 2 months). With some, but certainly not a lot of exercise, I have lost all but 8 pounds at just shy of 3 months and can wear one pair of pre-pregnancy jeans (my former extremely bloated and huge feeling jeans) comfortably with another pair coming along nicely.
It has proven to me that every pregnancy is different. And that my body likes me a lot better this time around.

With every pregnancy I keep having to buy new bras… and then never being able to wear the old ones again. I’m a little worried that at 6 months pregnant I’m growing out of my 38DD… and the sad part is they never lost the floppy. Oh well, as you say, my hubby loves them! ;)
