My body continues to surprise me!

For 40.5 weeks, I focused on being pregnant and not much else.  Of course I considered what life would be like after the bump, but most of my reading and research was on breastfeeding and caring for the baby, and much less about me.

Now that my little boy is on the outside, I’m discovering some things about my postpartum body that I wasn’t expecting.  Here are five surprises I’ve experience this week…

1.  Night Sweats — This has definitely been the number one postpartum surprise to me.  I knew my hormones would be all over the place, but I didn’t know that would mean that I’d be dropping buckets of sweat every night.  My poor husband claims he’s been having night sweats too, but I think he’s actually just drowning being next to me in bed.  As if I didn’t already have enough to do with a newborn in the house, I have now added “wash sheets” to my daily list of chores.

2.  Stinking – This one shouldn’t really be a huge surprise given number one, but all the showering and deodorant in the world aren’t hiding the fact that I am definitely stinkier than I used to be.  I find myself reapplying deodorant several times a day to keep up with it, but I assume it’s just one of those things that will take some time to work itself out.  In the meantime, it’s kind of embarrassing!

3.  Big Boobs! – Again, shouldn’t be a surprise since everyone knows your boobs get big when they are full of milk.  But, MAN!  As someone who has been flat-chested her entire life, I am welcoming my new boobs and hoping they stay forever (but I know they won’t).  I am lucky that I haven’t been ridiculously engorged or had too much pain, so I’m able to just enjoy this change and feel good that I seem to be feeding my son well so far.

4.  Skin Changes — I had my fair share of skin changes during pregnancy, like dark marks on my cheeks, the linea nigra and a dry, flaky scalp.  I wasn’t expecting to have even more skin changes now that pregnancy is over! The linea nigra on my stomach is much darker now, probably because my skin is no longer all stretched out and the line has condensed.  I’m also back to having teenage breakouts — not awesome.

5.  Confidence — I always expected that after having a baby I would feel flabby, frumpy, and down in the dumps until I lost my baby weight and got my shape back.  While I’m not exactly pumped to still be wearing maternity jeans, I’ve been pleasantly surprised that I actually feel really confident about my postpartum body.  I’m finding that I don’t care so much about my looks, but rather I’m still in awe that my body created and delivered this 8 pound joy to me.  Knowing that my body nourished and created my son gives me confidence and a little extra swagger.  Even if it that step is taken in maternity jeans…

What postpartum surprises did you experience?

A friend of mine had the same night sweats. She’s a health care professional and said your body takes on LOTS of extra water to support baby and then it gets rid of it en masse via sweat after he’s born.
One of those things no one tells you…

I have followed your whole journey through your blog and babble and have enjoyed it immensely (did I mention that I am newly pregnant, and also a vegetarian…who now apparently hates vegetables!). I love this post about your body and the things it does….and I just wanted to say that I think you look wonderful! Truly glowing and so happy! :)

I love my breastfeeding boobs, too. One super important thing ti remember-they may seem like they shrink and get softer as the months go on-the feeling of engorgement and breast size have zero affect on if Cullen is getting enough milk. Sometimes my boobs seem like normal, non-breastfeeding boobs and I wonder if I have enough milk for my 5 month old, but wet diapers are the best indicator. Glad you have some confidence, you should, you are gorgeous!

I totally had that same confidence after giving birth. I think it was mostly because it was such a relief not to have a massive, heavy belly.

while i agree with these…you also had a baby 2 weeks ago! pp body is all ‘new and exciting’ so to speak. i have a 6 mo old and i’m not nearly as amazed and humbled by my big boobs, elastic kangaroo pouch, and body odor. it gets old. fyi – antibacterial soap helps bo.

The production of going to the bathroom (without getting too graphic): having to use a squirt bottle with warm water rather than wipe, not being allowed to push things out the other end (so the stitches wouldn’t bust). It was quite gross really. Surprisingly so.

Yeah so I had NONE of that! :S Well maybe bigger boobs but when you are a G cup it doesn’t really notice.

justme commented on Nov 03 11 at 2:11 pm

I’d gladly give back my growing bust line and dread for them to get even bigger. A friend at work said today “big boobs are definitely a side effect you’re experiencing.” lol and I’m wearing a wrap sweater over them today. Just hoping everything goes back to where it came from!

Yeah I’m with you on most of these! But my smell is more spit uppy than bo! Do yourself a favor and in a week or so buy some new jeans. Even if they get too big you will use them next kid too. I dropped below my prepreg weight while nursing #1 but my hip bones just never got small enough to fit in old jeans. I waited too long last time to buy some but was glad to have them pre and post #2! :)

It keeps changing. My son is 16 months and I think about two months I have to go through both mine and his clothes and cull out what doesn’t fit anymore. And isn’t not just the size that changes, it’s the shape. Ah sweet chaos.

I didn’t get night sweats with my first so it was a huge surprise for me too when I had my twins. What was helpful for me was to lay a clean nightgown by the bed before I went to sleep and then sleep on a towel in my bed – when I woke in the night to feed my twins, I’d get cold from being soaked so I’d change gowns and remove the towel. Then my bed would be dry again for me to fall back asleep without freezing. Not ideal but it worked for me for those few weeks of misery!

Carrie commented on Nov 03 11 at 2:28 pm

about *every* two months (oops)

Jenny commented on Nov 03 11 at 2:29 pm

I got stretch marks places I didn’t expect.
Thighs, hips, VAGINA
My belly, however, didn’t get any.
And after 8 months of breast feeding my breasts look empty, sad, drained… Stretched.
But my son is amazing and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

My little sister had a baby at the end of June and was wearing bikinis soon after. Good for you to also feel comfortable in your skin after having a baby.

nikki commented on Nov 03 11 at 2:54 pm

i’m having the stinking problem now and i’m just barely 6mths pregnant. I’m not sweating more, I just smell more and it’s making me crazy!!!! i’m going to have to start wearing my hubby’s deodorant.

Tara commented on Nov 03 11 at 2:56 pm

I liked this blog post I have recently been feeling the same way about my body I am 7 months post partum and although I am nursing and have been exclusively for the past 6 months aunt flo has been coming to visit and unexpectedly I am having a challenge on getting use to it again I am confused and uncertain about my symptoms one month it’s like when I was a teenager and I get terrible cramps and another month i have a roller coaster of emotions! Anyone feeling like this I know I should talk to my midwife but I wanted to see how other women cope.

Serissa commented on Nov 03 11 at 3:11 pm

Most of that didn’t happen to me, but my boobs did get, and stay, big, so don’t give up hope!

Frances commented on Nov 03 11 at 3:19 pm

I’m glad to hear that other people have bad body odor after birth as well. I had forgotten how bad can be since I have four years between babies. Yuck- I hate it.

Erin commented on Nov 03 11 at 3:53 pm

The changes continue, too. Really lovely changes. My little boy is just over two. I am stronger and more toned than I’ve been in years, particular in the upper body, from lifting and holding my him. And since I am still nursing, I have lost spectacular amounts of weight [without trying], and am thinner than I was pre-pregnancy…in fact, thinner than I’ve been in many years. And also because I am nursing, and often chasing my toddler around the playground, my skin is more radiant than it was pre-pregnancy. Since I am in my mid-forties, these are all very welcome changes.

Rachel Dowling commented on Nov 03 11 at 4:05 pm

Just a tip for you! I’m menopausal and have the same night sweat issues. I started wearing my dry fit running shorts and shirts to bed and it helped a bit with comfort.

Susan commented on Nov 03 11 at 6:51 pm

Losing my hair! Your hair doesn’t fall out when you’re pregnant…then it starts to fall out by the handfuls…It started at about 3 months…I had read about it and was expecting it, but I did not expect the large amount! It looks like I’m going bald every time I shower! Oh and the hair gets wrapped around your babies hands and feet….I feel so bad for my little girl…Oh and since you will be cloth diapering like me…It gets all in their cloth diapers too…..

Sarah W. commented on Nov 03 11 at 10:40 pm

My rosacea cleared up, which is nice. Probably due to hormones. Now my youngest is 3 years old and I finally feel really good about the way I look. I don’t look exactly the same as I used to and I certainly have a baby belly, stretch marks, the whole deal but I like myself more now than I did before. Go figure!

BR commented on Nov 03 11 at 11:33 pm

Yes! What is UP with the night sweats??! Awful! Technically it’s the same thing as hot flashes since there isn’t a placenta to produce progesterone. So we breast feeding moms get to deal w/it longer than formula feeding moms bc of the lack of estrogen. Early menopause here I come!

Jessie @ Graze With Me commented on Nov 04 11 at 8:37 pm

I have hot flashes now (about 7.5 mos preggy). I had stretch marks way before I ever got pregnant (from being overweight) so it doesn’t bother me like it seems it bothers most people. I am surprised that I have them running from the top of my pelvis to the underside of my bump… it makes it seem like my vagina is a demilitarized zone, with trenches running all over!

I’ve got a little less than 8 weeks left.

Christie F commented on Nov 06 11 at 6:56 pm

the body odor thing totally threw me off. it’s one of those things nobody tells you about, but my husband has happily pointed it out to me more than a few times.
