The Bean is Weaned
I haven’t nursed Little Bean since Monday. I thought I’d be a little more emotional about it but the truth is, I don’t mind. I loved nursing both my boys but by 6 months I’m pretty much done with it and so are they. Neither one asked, missed, cried or even seemed to notice when we stopped. If they did I’d continue a little longer but honesty, I think they like food too much!
As you may have noticed from our Baby Food Adventures, he’s taken to solids pretty well. I mix some dry formula in with most meals to supplement his diet and I have enough frozen breastmilk to give him a glass a day for the next week or two.
He’s pretty much able to eat most things we are, within reason of course. I’ll puree up our protein (chicken, pork, etc) with some veggies and give a single grain cereal on the side. So far it’s been working well and I like that he’s been exposed to quite a few flavors and textures. Just wait until you see our latest adventure! Let’s just say he’s quite expressive when given a strong veggie like red peppers. I hope to prep all the pictures this weekend.
I know many people nurse well beyond 6 months but for me it’s always seemed like a natural wean point, and I must admit, I’m happy to have my body 100% back.

Meagan commented on Oct 28 11 at 11:09 pmI think I’ll miss it when the time comes, even though right now I can’t wait for someone else to be able to feed him (he won’t take a bottle). Right now we are trying to introduce rice cereal and a sippy cup but so far he isn’t all that enthusiastic about either.
Amy commented on Oct 29 11 at 10:10 amMy babies didn’t seem to miss it when I weaned them. It was nice to be able to get dressed and not fret over how easy/hard it would be to get my boobs out of whatever top I was wearing. Also, I liked how I could hold my baby right up close to my face when I gave them a bottle. I did miss having those boobs though. They weren’t quite the same afterward.
Tara commented on Oct 29 11 at 10:41 amI do not have much milk these days (baby is a little over 8 mos) and am considering stopping… I don’t have any frozen milk, what do you plan to do once yours is gone? will you give him a cup of formula a day, or just drop a bottle all together? I really don’t want to deal with bottles, but I feel like I remember hearing that their main nutrition should come from breastmilk or formula for the first year. But I guess if you are adding it to food… I just don’t know what to do.
Roni commented on Oct 29 11 at 10:53 am@Tara – Actually I don’t even give him a bottle now. I just put it in a sippy cup. I make sure to put dry formula in his meals and make sure to serve things with fats and proteins like avocado and full fat yogurt.
I’ve heard the formula thing too but I also heard that it doesn’t give them all they after 6 months. My guys is eating well, graining and thriving so I’m not not worried about it but check with your doc for his/her opinion. I’m sure they will make a recommendation.
Debbie commented on Oct 30 11 at 12:07 am@Tara, you should check with you child’s doctor. I was also told that babies need breast milk or formula as a main component of their diet until age one. At 12 months he was still nursing about three times per day, and I gradually weaned him. Granted all babies are different, but I would check-in with a doctor to be sure. I found this site with some nutritional guidelines. Hope it helps :)
