Messing with the Schedule

Photo 8BD7DCA3 3E78 1661 AC7D BF20CFDD5C1B 300x224 Messing with the ScheduleLast week, as I was breezing through my blog feed reader I read that my bloggy friend, E, puts her baby (who is the same age as Tate) to bed at 6 PM. This stopped me in my tracks. Tate goes down generally between 9 and 9:30. I started to fantasize about having my evening to myself. Imagine all the things I could get done!

Last night as Tate was doing his I am whiny and tired routine earlier than usual,  I had the genius idea to put him down an hour early. How naive I was. He went down without a hitch and I puttered around the house getting all sorts of things done. I crawled into bed after midnight and guess who decided to wake up as soon as I was drifting off to sleep.

Tate woke up at least 5 more times through the night and decided it was time to get up for the day at 6 AM, more than an hour before the sun was up and several hours before he normally does.

I have learned my lesson. No more tweaking the schedule – no matter how much I want to. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Have you ever tried to change your baby’s schedule? What were the results?

A gentle reminder: every baby is different. And a reminder not to expect miracles overnight. You are trying to change his schedule over time. Fifteen minutes earlier than his usual time each day…you’ll be at an earlier bedtime real soon! Our little one goes down at 6:45 and I thank the stars for it. And thank “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child”. Good luck.

It’s always horrendous results for me too, when I try for too much earlier with my 4 month old, or if I wake him up for one last feeding, thinking it will help him sleep better. It’s even to the point where he starts confusing day and night again and is up every 3 hours, cause, “it’s time to eat, right?” Nooooo.

I read somewhere that if you’re going to make changes, do it 15 minutes at a time! Too bad that was after I tried changing up the routine by about an hour… I had the same awful night and learned my lesson. But apparently, if you do it 15 minutes a night… or was it every few nights and wait for them to adjust? Jeez, these babies can be complicated! Hope tonight is much better for you & baby Tate too!

@Sarah Faye I love that book! Mine have all gone down around 6:45 and 7. They get up by 7 am though because I work. I think sleep is so important for kids, mainly b/c my first wasn’t a good sleeper for a while and still needs a strict routine. When I have to be out the door by 7:15 I didn’t think it was fair to keep them up later. It worked for us though. If I didn’t work, they would go down later and get up later…I haven’t slept in for over 4 years!

I honestly don’t understand why anyone wants their baby down that early. When would your working spouse really see the child? Don’t you like to go out to dinner, or take an evening walk sometimes? I would feel grounded in my house starting at 6pm (or if the baby is down at 6pm, 5:30pm – when the nighttime routine begins). That would mean not only are you stuck at home for a morning nap and an afternoon nap, you put them to bed and have 6 more hours at home before you go to bed. Cabin fever anyone?
I understand that children need plenty of sleep, but mine just slept a little later in the morning, and my husband and I got to have a life without booking a babysitter multiple times a week. And I always find my kids most enjoyable in the evening, and a later bedtime means I have my husband home and doing a lot of the dinner and bedtime routine; I’m not flying solo.

We put B down at 6 as well, and it works for us. It’s the only time of day I get anything done. BUT, he’s also up at 3 and 6 a.m. for feedings, so there’s definitely a trade-off to early bed-time. (Although, I can often get him to go back down until 8 or so, if I play my cards right.)

Yea I’ve been putting my daughter to bed at 7, and it seems to work well, it doesnt seem to matter if i put her down on time or later she always wakes up on average at 7:30, probably because she got so used to mommy getting up then for work, but even though i have never been a morning person getting up that early is kinda nice because i actually get more things done during the day

Because my husband works from 3-11, the baby wasn’t going to bed until 11:15. It was horrific. He slept in until 10, which was awesome, but I knew it wasn’t good for him. So now he’s in bed at 8. Now I get some time to myself before the hubby gets home and I can even go to bed earlier if I want. Not a fan of the 7am wake-ups though.

I put the baby to sleep when she is tired. Usually its around 8:30 or 9. She has an older sister she shares a room with so doing it any earlier usually just makes her wake up when the older ones are getting ready for bed. We wake up at 6:30 to eat before the kids go to school and she is back to sleep right after we drop the other kids off at school. She sleeps between 8 to 11 and I do everything I need to do then. I enjoy our night family time. On the weekend I work so she just sleeps through til about 9:30 or 10. It works well for everyone. I am also in school so I just do homework til about midnight after she sleeps and nap with her during her afternoon nap.

We start our evening routine around 6/6:30 & our 4 month old is usually in bed by 7:30/8:00. We’ve just started doing Tracy Hogg’s EASY routine and for the most part it is working pretty well for us. My husband plays with the baby when he gets home from work & loves doing the evening ritual (bath-time, swaddling, etc.). Gabe definitely sleeps better through the night when he’s well rested (proper naps during the day/not over-tired). He does get up between 6/7 though, but I like to start my day fairly early, so it works for us. I find that time in the evening with my husband indispensable since we’re go-go-go all day long and need some together time. As we transition to the EASY routine I’m finding we have to do it in stages and take it slow, 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there to set a pattern that both baby & I can live with.
