My Baby Is Off the (Height and Weight) Charts.
The results (of Vivi’s four month well baby visit) are in! She is healthy! Developing right on schedule! Cute as a button! (So maybe that’s my diagnosis, not the doctor’s.) However parts of me (my back) knew that the doctor was going to say something big.
Big as in my baby. My baby is a very big baby.
One double cheeseburger shy of 18 pounds to be exact.
My four month old baby is the size of a sturdy nine month old baby. My four month old baby is bigger than her sister was at seven months (she did have an extra pound on her sister at birth to be fair.) My four month old baby is fitting most comfortably in 12 month clothes (some of this is due to her fluffy cloth diapered bum.)
The doctor said it was nothing to worry about, she’s proportionate. She’s long and chubby with a nicely sized noggin (Addie had a big noggin and chub for days too.) Turns out all those people who assumed she was much older were kind of right…baby got…big.
It’s kind of unfair. She started out so small and got so big so fast. As a snuggled her big sister on the couch tonight while we watched a movie I was poked by knobby elbows, knees, hip bones and shoulder blades (Oh! The shoulder blades! OW!) Once upon a time those knobby knees had dimples too.
I’ve heard that consecutive babies generally get bigger at birth, but do they normally get bigger quicker in the first few months as well? Is it some sort of survival tactic of second children? Because I can tell you after watching Addie manhandle Vivi today I’m kind of glad that Vivi will be able to hold her own.
My back however, it begs to differ.

Sara commented on Sep 12 11 at 7:56 amI know what you mean! My son is 17 lbs at 3 months old, and everyone thinks he’s older than he is. Also, I can’t carry him for long. Even my moby and mei tei carriers strain my shoulders. I guess I’ll be investing in an ergo or something soon!

Jen commented on Sep 12 11 at 7:58 amLily has been off the charts just like Vivi since just about the same age. She too was bigger than my first at birth, at nearly 9 pounds. Ageism proportionate as well, and at her two year appointment I was gently warned that “we don’t want her to continue to grow at this rate”. Needless to say, now, 6 months later, she has grown atleast two more inches in height and still weighs in at 40 pounds, so it seems to be evening out. They did run some bloodwork at her 2 yr appointment, checking for diabetes and any possible thyroid issues, which all came back negative. She’s just a big girl! No real reason, she just is! Vivi is adorably chubby, and I love it! :-)

Katie commented on Sep 12 11 at 8:36 amLucas just turned 10 mos Saturday and is just shy of 18 lbs. :) To be fair, my 1st was only 14 lbs and my 2nd was over 20 lbs at the same ages.
My little bro was 10-6 at birth – and seriously a fat baby until he really started moving after he turned 1. Now he’s 6 ft tall and normal. It all works out.

rt commented on Sep 12 11 at 9:02 amMy son was 20 pounds at 4 months and since then he’s always been tall/heavy for his it did eventually even out a bit. I think he’s “only” at 85% on the charts now and he’s six years old.
Samantha Jo campen commented on Sep 12 11 at 10:47 amThat was Theo. 19 lbs at four months. 29.5 at one year. Now he’s a string bean and at 3.5 is the size of a perfectly normal 5.5 year old.
Car seats, for us, were the worst part about having a big kid. Out of the infant seat but he couldn’t sit up yet, so putting him somewhere when we went out to eat, etc was challenging. But oh, the chub rolls! The belly ripe for zerberts! It’s all so very good :-)

tehamy commented on Sep 12 11 at 12:40 pmThis makes me chuckle because Xander will be a year next week (HOLD ME) and he weighs about 19 pounds. My older son weighed 20 lbs 1 oz at his one year appointment. My boys are just at the bottom of the curve. The start out small too. Jack wa 5lbs 12oz and Xander was 6lbs 5oz.
And as far as the manhandling? Xander is very quickly showing that he is the more aggressive of the two. Must be a survival thing!

Shaina commented on Sep 13 11 at 12:46 amMy kids have all been large (off the growth charts large), but they end up tall and trim like their father, so go figure. My just-turned 3-year-old is currently 42 pounds, but he’s got the height to match. I’ve always been glad they’re healthy more than anything, and their pediatrician concurs.
