Sneeze on the Baby and I’ll Sell You
September marks the first cold of the year brought home by the six year old from her petri dish of a school first grade. The six year old LIVES for hugging, kissing and touching the almost four month old so today when she crawled into my bed with a fever and stuffy nose? We had a talk about what it means to be sick with a baby around.
Y’all? Keeping a sister lover like Addie away from her baby? Is like keeping goats away from, stuff goats really like.
“You can’t kiss her face, okay?”
“Okay.”
“You can’t touch her hands or feet without washing yours first either, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Cough into your elbow?”
“I KNOW MOM.”
First thing that happens when I bring the baby downstairs? FACE IN HER FACE KISSES ON HER FACE HANDS ON HER HANDS.
I mean, sheesh. Most of my friends all have more than one kid, and if I’ve learned one thing it’s that when one gets sick? They ALL get sick.
Just not at the same time.
Unless it’s vomit.
Then everyone gets it including you, leaving you wishing that you had run off years ago with that smarmy guy that used to sell fake butter.
It’s really not that big of deal. Have to buck up the immune system sometime don’t we?
But is it true, when one gets sick it’s all downhill from there?

I have grown to HATE the first 2 weeks of the 6 YOs school year. First he gets it, them my hubby, then me….. when I think the 3YO has escaped it….. a week later the 3 YO not the baby YET though (5 weeks old). Then it lingers for about a MONTH….. No matter how much immunity building vitamins i give the kids, how much :EmergenC”i drink, how often I bathe the kids in GermX…. We ALL get it. But we all survive it EVERY year.
Marta commented on Sep 02 11 at 9:44 amYeah in the winter we tend to pass illnesses amongst each other. First one of the kids and then one of us and then back and around and once more for good measure. =)
Kim Q commented on Sep 02 11 at 3:59 pmYes, true. But in our family the trend seems to be, kid A gets it, then kid B gets it, then mom and dad get it 20 times worse! One particular stomach bug that had little effect on the littles landed momma in the hospital. Sigh. Of course, I would much rather it that way than the other way around, but I would rather it instead happen NOT AT ALL!

April commented on Nov 16 11 at 12:06 amMy son had his first cold when he was 8 WEEKS old, a bug brought into the house by his 5 1/2 year old sister from kindergarten. I tried to keep them apart, but to no avail. He wound up first with a bad cold and then with an ear infection. When I took him in to see the doctor, she told me that it was a good thing that he wasn’t running a fever because she would want to do a spinal tap to check for meningitis if he was! While we were waiting in the pharmacy for his antibiotic, a little girl came up and wanted to touch him. When I told her that she probably shouldn’t touch him because he was sick she replied, “That’s OK. I’m sick too!”
Sigh, at least we survived that one!
